  1. Baby driver opening sequence By Kitt O’Neill

  2. What is the film about? • Baby driver is about a young boy called who is only named as ‘Baby’ and he is the getaway driver for a group of professional bank robbers. • Due the he fact he is young, and therefore considered untrustworthy by the group when they first meet they are all very skeptical about his skills and to weather or not that can trust him. • However, he proves them wrong and ends up shocking them all with his amazing driving skills, resulting in their get away.

  3. Action/thriller genre The use of costume is typical for an action film because they are all dressed identically in suits, with sunglasses on which adds a sense of mysteriousness and shows they are some sort of agent/action based character. They are portrayed here as being very professional as there is no dialogue, they all know to go to the back of the car to get the items and when to do it.

  4. Characters We are shown the 3 characters in suits storming into the bank, whilst the baby presses play on his music and dances and sings in the car. He carries on singing until there is a shot reverse shot where he looks into the bank and one of the male characters shoots his gun. The diegetic music stops and the baby lowers his glasses as if he is shocked. This suggests it was not part of the plan and that it is going wrong.

  5. Mise-en-scène • Sound: “baby” presses play on his music device, which plays “BellBtooms” by Jon Spencer Blues explosion. This creates diegetic sound directly to him. • Camera: The 4 close ups of each character’s face, are all shown for about 4 seconds each in sync with the beat of the music. This builds tension as the sound is quite upbeat. It also highlights the sunglasses to show they are enigmatic and trying to hide their idenity.

  6. Mise-en-scène • Camera: the use of close ups focusing on the car pedals, gear stick and wheel (car parts) with jump cut editing builds intensity as the car speeds away. The tracking shot of the get away car being chased by the police car also shows how close they are to getting g caught which again builds intensity.

  7. Audience • From what we can see in the opening sequence, the film does not seem to be overly rude or explicit, although there is some violence and gun use . • The film is rated ”R” (18+) which suggests that the film does get increasingly more appropriate for adult viewing.
