  3. What is Virtual Campus Tour At a Glance

  4. It is an instructional design project • Contents are presented in video format • Contents are (2 episodes) • Campus Center of UHM • Hamilton Library of UHM • Broadcasting using YouTube & Blogger • For new international students • Tested with sample group in real situations • China, Thailand, Vietnam, USA mainland, and Big Island Hawaii

  5. Quick Preview

  6. Background • 47% of international students at UHM were from Asia (2006) • Adjusting to new environment is a barrier for these students • International students would benefit colleges in USA • Video is the preferred choice of medium • Learners tend to remember information gained through video better than through reading and listening (Dale, 1969) • Using video blog, orientation can begin even before international students have left his or her homes

  7. Objectives The module with 10 objectives aim to familiarize international student to UHM’s Campus Center and Hamilton Library. Ultimately, international students should be able to locate facilities, specify & access services available in each facility, know rules, regulations, and fee for services.

  8. Tools used for Virtual Campus Tour Making video clips Dissemination  • YouTube • Blogger • Google Docs, Form • Survey Monkey (but it was eliminated later) • iMovie'09 • GarageBand'09 • Photoshop CS3 • Snapz Pro X

  9. Results & Findings Virtual Campus Tour

  10. One-on-One • People for this session were: • A friend in Thailand - via Skype • A 2nd year ETEC student - Face to face • Three 1st year Thai students - face to face/1-on-1 • An immigrant Thai student at KCC - via email and phone

  11. Changes after One-on-One • Navigation was changed in portal page • Video clips were revised in term of wording • Google Form was used instead of Survey Monkey (free version) • Unnecessary texts and links were eliminated from Blogger • Survey questions were revised • Reminded participants to jot down their starting times

  12. Small Group Testing • Conducted with 18 participants including: • Professors in China • IFP students from Thailand and Vietnam who will come for UHM in Fall 2009 • A hotel manager in Thailand • Thai students in Big Island • Vietnamese students in Boston • A primary teacher in Thailand

  13. Finding 1 The module was effective according to pre-test and post-test scores, derived from 10 objectives

  14. Finding 2 • 95% of the participants agreed that the modules were easy to follow and understand • 67% strongly agreed that sound and narration were clear for them to understand • All the participants felt comfortable doing the module online  • All agreed that Virtual Campus Tour was useful and would help them as international students to establish themselves in the new environment

  15. Finding 3 • All participants asked for more episodes of the Virtual Campus Tour to cover all the main facilities and services that were important for international students. • Two major problems were detected by participants. One was the slow Internet connectivity while the other concerned the small text on the maps.

  16. Finding 4 A Thai participant saw a blank portion of the screen where the video clip should be shown

  17. Suggestions for Future Changes Virtual Campus Tour

  18. Suggestions for Future Changes • Maps used in the module were not clear on YouTube, the name of places were small and hard to see • Still images of the map might be more appropriate than captured video to illustrate directions • Using only text based questions for testing about maps and directions were not suitable. Alternate survey tools should be used in the future as the existing survey tool did not allow the use of images

  19. Implications and Discussion Virtual Campus Tour

  20. A problem was found when using Google Form for test questions. The number of responses in the spreadsheet page was not synchronized with the summary page • Google Form automatically adjusted the interface language differently for each country • YouTube delimitation - 2 participants could not view the video module from YouTube

  21. Conclusion Virtual Campus Tour was useful for international students Ubiquitous online free tools proved to be efficient for this Virtual Campus Tour. University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, and its colleges, might want to make their own orientation video clips available on YouTube for International students.
