  2. Cornell Method • Learned freshmen year • Left side: Main Ideas • Right side: Notes, • Advantages: • Organized, systematic for review, simple

  3. The Outline Method • Dash or indented: Place major points farthest to left. Indent each specific point to the right. • So little details are indented. • Advantage: well-organized, Easy to review • Disadvantage: requires more Thought for accurate org

  4. The Mapping Method Advantages: Connections are seen, easy to edit notes w/numbers, colors, symbols. Disadv: You may not hear changes in content from major point to major point. Good for heavy lecture content and well-organized.

  5. The Charting Method D: learning how to use the system and locating appropriate categories. A: Good for chronological note-taking, provides easy review

  6. The Sentence Method • Write even new thought, fact, topic on separate line, #ing as you go. • A: More organized than a paragraph • D: Difficult to review w/o editing/cleaning up. Can’t determine major pts from minor • EX: A revolution is any occurrence that affects other aspects of life, such as economic, social, and so forth. Therefore revolutions cause change. • Rev: occur that affects other aspects of life: e.g., econ, socl,. Etc.

  7. Other tips from me  • Again, come up with your own abbreviations and shorthand. • Turn a Headline into a question and when you review, see if you can answer the question or not. • Bullet points are great • With mini points • And so forther • With all the little details  • Use what works for you. • Avoid writing complete sentences-not enough time in lectures. • Take notes! Don’t be lazy. Lots of information is coming to you and will be necessary to know for future essays, tests, etc. • Will need it for most jobs

  8. Finally…. • Homework: Read the Intro Material on the Puritans in the text, found on pages 6-19. Take good notes, any style YOU like/find useful. These notes will be helpful come Monday. You have the rest of class to begin; Have a fabulous weekend! • HW: Rd p 6-19, take notes for Mon. Enjoy wkend
