  1. Communications Technology An Introduction

  2. So what exactly is Communications Technology? According to the DoE PSP (Nov 2009)…. • Communications Technology (CMT 11, CMT 12) is a course that involves a hands-on approach to electronic, print and web communication concepts. • Communications Technology provides all students with hands-on activities and introduces them to a broad spectrum of technological concepts both in traditional media and new media.

  3. By the end of the either course, students will be able to use a range of technological tools, processes, and applications, integrate communications technology with other academic disciplines, and create communication materials that solve technological problems, and explain the consequences of technology and how it affects society.

  4. Com Tech Modules • Com Tech 11 and Com Tech 12 is designed for all students. Since Tech Ed facilities and resources vary from school to school, the course is designed to offer some selection with respect to the topics covered. • Module 1 – Fundamentals of Com Tech (compulsory 11 & 12– with a threading option) • Module 2 – Photography (compulsory 11 & 12)

  5. And any three other modules from…. Module 3 – Technical Design (CADD, Electronics, 3D Modeling, Technical Drawing) Module 4 – Graphic Design (Desktop Publishing, screen printing) Module 5 – Web Publishing (website design, CSS, template design) Module 6 – Animation (Flash, stop motion) Module 7 – Broadcasting (streaming audio/video) Module 8 – Video Production (movie production, “commercials”, “rants”)

  6. But what does Communications Technology really look like…? A typical Com Tech classroom is diverse….. • There is a wide range of learning styles…. • There is wide range of cognitive abilities…. • There are accommodations…. • There are enrichments… • There are multiple activities going on at once… • But what are students really doing?

  7. ….students are sending and receiving messages…they are using their knowledge, the various tools in the classroom and newly acquired skills to send and receive messages. • These messages can be video, audio, digital, analog, optical, 3-D, static or animated. • So….what is the role of the teacher?

  8. ….the role of the Teacher is to… • … provide a safe learning environment. • … mentor technical skills • … provide positive/constructive feedback • … ensure student success with specific, measurable and attainable goals • … provide enrichment, accommodations and alternate assessment strategies

  9. …. foster independence • …. encourage “synergistic” learning • …. make “real-world” connections • …. make cross curricular connections • …. encourage “CREATIVITY” • Can we really encourage creativity or are there mitigating factors beyond our control? Sir Ken Robinson - TED Conference 2008
