  3. Physical Change • Definition • Physical Change: change in a substance where there is a change in form (shape, size, state) but the identity remains the same.

  4. Physical Change • Indicators of Physical Changes • a change in: texture, shape, size, color, odor, volume, mass, weight, and density. • Physical changes are predictable

  5. Physical Change • Examples • Solid Water (ice) Melting • H20(s)  H20(l) • Liquid Water Boiling • H20(l)  H20(g) • Mixing

  6. Chemical Change • Definition • Chemical Change : one or more substances combine or break apart (decompose) to form new substances • All chemical changes either release or absorb Heat • Products have different properties than reactants

  7. Chemical Change • Examples • Combustion (burning) • Corrosion (rusting) • Decomposition (rotting)

  8. Chemical Change • Indicators of Chemical Changes • Change in temperature • Unexpected change in color • Production of Light • Production of odor • Precipitate (making a new solid) • Fizzing and Foaming (making a new gas)

  9. Physical or Chemical Change? • Blending a smoothie
