  8. Laws are there to Protect you • Immunizations prevent illness • Personal confidence, motivation and knowledge allow you to act responsibly in all situations • That is why laws exist for consent as well.

  9. Consent and the Law Sexual activity without consent is always a crime regardless of age. Sexual assault to a young person < 19 years old is reportable by a professional.

  10. What Is consent? Consent is voluntary agreement. This means that two people agree to do certain things of their own free will. To consent to sexual activity means to agree freely The Law requires that a person take reasonable steps to find out whether the other person is consenting

  11. Legal consent means saying “Yes” because you want to say “Yes” A person who agrees to anything because he or she is pressured, afraid, forced, or threatened has not legally consented. This is because you have not voluntarily agreed to any activity.

  12. What is the age of consent for sexual activity? Age when teens can make their own decisions about sexual activity In Canada –the age was recently changed from 14 to 16- with some exceptions 12 & 13 year olds can consent to have sex with youth who areless than 2 years older than themselves Youth age 14-15 are able to consent with partners who areless than 5 years older

  13. What IS NOT consent ? There are times when consent is NOTlegally possible A child under age 12 can NEVER give legal consent to sexual activity. There can be no legal consent when a person is drunk, drugged, asleep, or passed out Someone under age 18 cannot legally consent to have sex with a person in a position of authority such as a teacher, health care provider, coach, minister, family member

  14. NO means NO ! NO always means NO STOP always means STOP If someone says NO and you do not stop, You are committing a crime

  15. IsSaying “NO” the only way to show that I do not consent? You can show by words or actions that you do not give consent Examples- struggling, pushing away, shaking head, trying to leave NO!

  16. What if I did not resist because I was too afraid? Even if you did not resist – the attacker cannot say you consented The law does not consider that you freely agreed just because you did not struggle or resist

  17. Tell the other person what is OKAY and what isn’t Say No when you mean no Say STOP when you mean stop If you say nothing – your partner might think everything is OK and you want to go further NO OK WHAT does she want?

  18. It’s your responsibility to accept and respect your partners limits. Your responsibility to ask your partner if what you are you doing is OKAY If your partner does not say “yes”, then STOP SILENCEdoes not mean consent !

  19. Protect Yourself and Others when at a Party. Be careful what you drink Drink only from bottles or cans that you buy or open yourself Keep your drink with you Don’t share or trade drinks

  20. Protect You and stay together GO to parties with friends Arrive together & leave together Look out for one another If a friend seems drunk , dizzy, or confused –STAY with them Take them home or get help if they need it

  21. Stay alert, aware, and sober Drugs and alcohol are often involved in sexual assault No one can consent to sex while drunk, drugged, or unconscious Know where you are, where you’re going, And always have a way home.

  22. TRUST your Feelings If you feel like you are being pressured, you are ! TRUST your feelings and LEAVE As soon as you feel uncomfortable at a party or anywhere else – trust your instincts and leave! Find a friend to leave with you Or call someone to come get you

  23. Abstinence Choosing not to have sexual intercourse (personal choice) You can still:  kiss  caress  masturbate  hold hands  enjoy activities together EFFECTIVENESS : 100%
