  2. BELL RINGER • Take a Syllabus from the Handout Area: • Silently read and review the syllabus, classroom expectations, and supply list.

  4. Classroom Goals • Become proficient with the writing process. • Write to entertain, inform, and share thoughts and feelings. • Become proficient with grammar and writing conventions. • Become engaged, analytical writers and readers.

  5. Response Card #1 • What are two of the reasons we will be writing this year?

  6. Guidelines for Success • Be in class on time. • Be prepared to work by bringing the necessary supplies. • Have a positive attitude and an open mind. • Always try your best.

  8. Activities • Students will complete reading, writing, and reflective/analytical activities in class. • Homework will be assigned as needed. • Students will complete at least 1 Project-based activity every grading period.

  11. Classroom Procedures • Beginning of Class • Arrive on time. • Gather any necessary materials. • Read the board and begin working on the bell ringer immediately.

  13. Classroom Procedures • During Class • Raise hand before speaking. • Remain quiet when receiving instruction. • Be respectful and actively listen.

  14. Classroom Procedures • During Class • Actively participate in all classroom activities. • Follow the daily rubric. • Follow all policies. (Dress code, no gum/candy, device policy, etc.)

  15. Classroom Procedures • Ending Class • Begin Wrap Up/Clean Up when notified (not before). • The bell does not release you, the teacher does.

  16. Response Card #5 • Scenario: You are looking forward to the end of class. It’s been a fun lesson, but you can’t wait to see the surprise your friend has been hinting at before lunch. The bell rings and Coach Jones is finishing up his instruction. What do you do? • Jump out of your seat and sprint toward the door. • Blurt out, “Coach Jones, the bell rang!” • Begin talking to your friend about meeting up later. • Patiently (and quietly) await your dismissal. You know Coach Jones is not trying to make you late for class.

  18. Response Card #6 • In order to receive the highest grade on a daily activity, how much effort should you give?

  19. Tardy Policy • You are tardy if… • You have not arrived to class within the passing period. • You must be stopped at the door to address dress code concerns. • Take care of personal business. • Passes will only be issued in emergency situations.

  20. Response Card #7 • Scenario: You are preparing to enter Coach Jones’ class. Somehow, the administrators didn’t notice your shirt is not tucked in. You figure since no one has said anything to you so far, everything is okay. Coach Jones notices everything, however, and stops you at the door to tell you to tuck in your shirt. As you fix your clothes, the bell rings. Are you considered tardy or not?

  21. Grading Policy • Daily Grades-60% (Classwork/Homework) • Major Grades-40% (Projects, Tests, Benchmarks, and Common Assessments)

  22. Assignments • Complete all daily and project assignments. • Turn in work to the appropriate tray. • Late work will receive a grade penalty. • Please review the DISD grading policy online with your parents/guardians.

  23. Supplies • Pens (blue or black)/Pencils • Notebook Paper (wide-ruled) • 1-inch binder • 5 dividers (Bell Ringer, Vocabulary, Reading Notes, Writing Notes, Journal) • 1 folder with pockets and brads (any color)
