  2. What is the Ninth Commandment? NC • “You shall not covet your neighbor's wife” • This commandment ecompasses a wide range of moral teachings on Christian marriage.

  3. Ninth Commandment Information NC • The whole verse in Exodus says “You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” — Exodus 20:17 (NIV)

  4. Information cont. NC • To covet is to have the strong desire for the possession of others' specific personal properties or relationships, going beyond simply admiring someone else's possessions

  5. Information about the Commandment NC • Coveting includes envy, resenting the fact that others have what you don't. • According to St. Thomas Aquinas, “Covetousness is the root of all actual sins.”

  6. The Ninth Commandment NC • Unlike the other commandments which focus on outward actions, this commandment focuses on thought. • This commandment forbids the desire for adultery. • Also forbids the desire of wanting something that does not belong to you and is owned by someone else.

  7. Moral Evils Against the Ninth Commandment: Adultery LT • Adultery is when two people have a relationship while both of them, or one of them, is married to someone else. • Adultery violates the commitment you make in your wedding vows. • Committing adultery is a grave sin, and it also causes serious emotional damage to the person you committed the act against (your husband or wife).

  8. Incest LT • Having a sexual relationship with a relative or in-law. • This is an illegal relationship, and one that’s unnatural and will ruin your family. • In cases of non-consensual incestual relationships, the Church doesn’t recognize you as committing a moral evil, and provides a supportive and safe environment to help you recover from the event(s).

  9. Polygamy LT • This is the act of having more than one wife. • This is a definite violation of both your marriage vows, and the natural law, which says marriage is between one man and one woman. • It’s a moral evil because you shouldn’t love more than one person the way you love your wife, the vows you take are special and shouldn’t involve other people.

  10. Free Union LT • A man and woman living together, engaging in sexual activities, but having no official bond tying them together. • When a couple labels themselves as a “free union” it means they have no intention, or a very small chance of getting married.

  11. Trial Marriage LT • This is when a man and woman live together and have a sexual relationship, but they have the intent to marry in the future. • People who are in trial relationships say the reason they live together is to get to know the other person on a even more personal level, and it helps them in making sure its the person they want to spend the rest of their life with.

  12. Divorce. LT • Divorce is a grave sin against your marriage vows. It breaks the natural law because you’re making the decision to not be with each other until death separates you. • Divorce causes huge emotional strain on everyone involved, and can leave emotional scarring on all parties involved, in some cases, the emotionally scarring is crippling, and can prevent someone from pursuing future relationships. • In case of serious circumstances, such as abuse or adultery, the Church will investigate the claim(s) and then declare there wasn’t a sacramental marriage.

  13. The Ninth Commandment in 2014 LT • One way to live by this would be to not cheat on your friend with her/his boyfriend/girlfriend. • You can also look at relationships in high school, and even college, as temporary, so you should keep your options open and not get too involved with someone, as that can lead to inappropriate behavior and actions. • Try and develop a strong relationship with your priest, so you have someone to guide and help you through the difficult decisions that may be part of a teenage relationship.

  14. The Ninth Commandment in 2014 LT • To simply live this commandment would be to respect everyone. If you have respect for them, you’re less likely to be envious of them. • We can trust that God has a plan for everyone, and leave our envy and/or lust behind, and trust in God and his plan.

  15. The Ninth Commandment in 2014 JR • The way to live this commandment in 2014 is to respect the choices that others have made around you. To respect yourself and others • Another way to live this commandment in 2014 is to treat others the way you would want to be treated because you would not want anyone to go behind you back and do that to you.
