  2. The First Commandment • I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them. (Exodus 20:2-5) • This commandment, along with the other 9, was given to Moses by God on Mt. Sinai SW

  3. Commandment Restated • Love and honor God above anything else in the universe SW

  4. What Does it Mean? • The commandment clearly states we must only worship the Lord • We must put church teachings ahead of our personal beliefs or social trends CG

  5. Purpose of the Commandment • This commandment is not meant to restrict us, rather it is meant to lead us to eternal happiness • Living the commandment will, in fact, bring us joy and unite us more fully to God SW

  6. What breaks this commandment? • Worshipping false idols such as a golden calf or Zeus • Over-indulging in material pleasures • Belief in psychics or horoscopes CG

  7. What Breaks This Commandment? • Placing our own beliefs above those of the church • Missing mass to pursue other interests • Worshipping the devil in any way CG

  8. What Breaks This Commandment? • Listening to hateful music • Belief in astrology CG

  9. What Breaks This Commandment • According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, this commandment is also concerned with sins against hope, such as despair and presumption • Failure to seek out the faith and simply believe what one wants CG

  10. How can we live this commandment as a student in 2014 America? • Living the commandment involves more than simply not breaking the commandment • We must consciously place God before any other person or thing SW

  11. How can we live this commandment as a student in 2014 America? • Going to mass on Sunday • Praying to God • Not allowing technology or other mediums replace God as the center of our lives SW

  12. How can we live this commandment as a student in 2014 America? • Avoid idolizing celebrities • Avoid idolizing anybody or anything SW

  13. How can we live this commandment as a student in 2014 America? • Listen to and promote music with a good “message”, as this can heal the soul • Read the Bible • Visit holy sites, such as Lourdes CG
