  2. Early Life/Life Before Emperor • born in Rome on October 24, A.D. 51 • youngest son of Vespasian and Domitillia I • Titus: Domitian's older brother of 10 years • high family status • adolescence marked by isolation • trained in Rome in same way as any member of senatorial elite

  3. Emperor Life • ignored senate and forms of constitution • guilty of confiscations and extortions • teased and irritated all classes; persecuted Jews and Christians • extension of Roman Power in Britian • A.D. 69-presented himself to invading Flavian forces, was hailed as Caesar, and moved into imperial residence • represented family in Senate and suggested that other issues be postponed until Vespian's arrival in East

  4. Emperor Life (continued) • raised silver content of denarius to 12% • great fire caused Rome in need of repair • had failures, but also left treasury with surplus, perhaps the best proof of a financially sound administration
