  2. Mods to MICE vessel M113 in synchrotron The melting of the target tip endangered the observation window below the target. The window will be moved. A thermocouple will be added to a new VAT isolation valve so the target tip temperature can be monitored. New ISIS pumping port and valve. Thermocouple enters here Beam direction Lighting window Moved observation window

  3. Hand operated VAT valve Vessel 17 kg Observation port Light 7.5 kg Mirror All parts have been delivered except vessel. Vessel due 15th May 2009.

  4. Assume Emissivity = 0.5 All heat transfer is via radiation. ‘Normal’ energy absorbed is 2J per shot i.e.2W. Hence target steady temp is 360C.* ‘Target stuck down’ energy absorbed is 120J. Temp rise per shot = 150C.* TC temp rise 0.05C or 0.2C TC absorbs 2/20 J or 120/20 J Radiation view factor of 1/20 assumes Target comes to rest in position shown. If it sticks in down position the view factor will be much less than 1/20. 20 mm Target radiates 2J or 120J *Ref CNB 27th September 2006

  5. To reduce installation time and radiation dose the cable ID and plug need to be on the other side.

  6. Conclusion • The TC does not seem to have a very good response time during normal operation. More detailed calculations • need to be done to check this. AA. • The vessel and valve assembly is heavy (25kg). EM to consider lifting device from triangular frame to assist. • The vessel and valve being heavy may spoil the aluminium diamond vacuum seal. EM to test in R78. • The thermal calculations are based on the old target shape with an area of ~770mm2 . The new target shape needs • to be considered. of 6
