  2. What is it? • Passato Prossimo is a past tense and it is equivalent to our: • “ed” as in she studied • Or “has” + “ed” as in she has studied

  3. What does it look like? • Io ho studiato • Noi abbiamo mangiato • Lei e` andata • Voi siete arrivati • Loro hanno camminato • Tu e tua sorella avete cercato

  4. What is it made of? • There are two parts to this: • Helping Verb: Avere or Essere • And the main verb: mangiare, cantare, sentire etc.

  5. Changes • First you must decide which helping verb you need. • Second you must remove the are, ere and ire from the main verb and add: ato, uto, and ito (depending on the endings) • Then you put them together: Io ho mangiato

  6. Avere • Mangiare • Cantare • Camminare • Sentire • Seguire • Leggere • Scrivere • Perdere • Vedere • Fare

  7. Today we will focus on avere verbs, but…. • You should know that the only difference with verbs like: uscire, andare, arrivare etc. • Is that they use essere: • For example: io sono uscito instead of • Io ho mangiato

Some things you should know… • With verbs that use avere, the only thing you have to do is pick the right form of avere (i.e. ho, hai, abbiamo etc.) • then you drop –are, -ere, -ire from the main verb and add: -ato, -uto, and –ito • BUT, • With verbs that use essere you still have to pick the right form of essere but • Then DEPENDING on the subject you need to change the “o” from –ato, -uto and –ito to fit the subject.
