  1. Philippians 2:12-30 “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ,

Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness; and hold such in reputation: Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.”

  6. I. The Example of Paul – vs.12-18 • V.12 – “beloved” / They were dear to his heart • “As ye have always obeyed” – Paul goes on to commend them for their obedience • “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” – Does not say work for your salvation

  7. I. The Example of Paul – vs.12-18 • V.13 – “For it is God which worketh in you” • Our salvation is worked in by the Holy Spirit in answer to faith • Our salvation is worked out by the Holy Spirit by our obedience

  8. I. The Example of Paul – vs.12-18 • V.14 – “Do all things without murmurings” – Murmuring is an expression of secret discontentment Philippians 4:11 – “For I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” 1 Timothy 6:6 – “But godliness with contentment is great gain.”

  9. I. The Example of Paul – vs.12-18 • V.15 – “That ye may be blameless and harmless” – This is moral integrity expressing itself outwardly • “The sons of God” – This stresses the dignity and character of the relationship

The Example of Timothy – vs.19-24 • V.19 – “But I trust in the Lord to send Timothy shortly unto you” – Paul was hoping to send Timothy to be a channel of blessing to the Philippians • V.20 – “Likeminded” – Equal in soul • V.21 – “For all seek their own” – Most people strive for, look for, and search for their own things

  14. II. The Example of Timothy – vs.19-24 • V.22 – “But ye know the proof of him” – Timothy had proven worthy • “That as a son with the father” – close relationship of Paul and Timothy • V.23 – “Him therefore I hope to send presently” – As soon as possible I will send Timothy

The Example of Epaphroditus – vs.25-30 • V.25 – “Suppose” / To consider, regard, or think • V.26 – “For he longed after you all” – Epaphroditus earnestly desired to see the Philippians • “Full of heaviness” – Be troubled or distressed • “Because that ye hear that he had been sick” – Epaphroditus became sick, but he did not quit

The Example of Epaphroditus – vs.25-30 • V.27 – For indeed he was sick nigh unto death – His sickness nearly proved fatal • V.28 – “I sent him therefore the more carefully” / Earnestly, diligently • V.29 – “Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness” – Welcome him in the lord • “And hold such in reputation” – Keep on holding him in high honor

  17. III. The Example of Epaphroditus – vs.25-30 • V.30 – “Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death” – This means that Epaphroditus was at the point of death
