Coordinated Bay-wide Monitoring Effort • Strategy developed by the Tidal Design Workgroup; based on specific objectives • Pilot projects conducted by DNR/CBL and DEQ/VIMS • Bay-wide implementation – consistency developed by multijurisdictional workgroups, meetings, conference calls • Partners include VIMS, CBL, DEQ, DNR, CBP, YSI, Statistical Analysist

  3. Shallow Water Monitoring Current Funding Level • Assessment period – 3 years per segment • Per segment, 3 year assessment cost is $105,000 • At current level: • 16 segments by 2005 • 32 segments by 2008 • 48 segments by 2011 • 64 segments by 2014 • 80 segments by 2017

Future Issues - Leveraging Costs • State Agencies – DNR, DEQ • Federal Agencies – EPA Chesapeake Bay Program • - NOAA National Estuarine Research Reserve • - NOAA Coastal Oceans Program • Academic Institutions - CBL and VIMS • Local Governments - Harford County, Anne Arundel County • Environmental Groups – Chester River Association

  5. Coordination Issues - Monitoring • Similar monitoring design • YSI instrumentation with similar calibration procedures and parameters • Standard measurement protocols • Standard Light Attenuation protocols • Evaluating post calibration for fluorescence with discrete chlorophyll measurements

  6. Coordination Issues – Data Management • CBP protocols for parameter naming conventions, data processing, data documentation and quality control/quality assurance • Data submission – Physical parameters and calibration data - 180 days after collection • Web access – Maryland displays both continuous monitoring and water quality mapping data on the “EyesontheBay” web site

  7. Dissemination of Information: Providing Web-Based Information – Bay Monitoring “Eyes on the Bay” web site provides latest information from DNR’s Bay monitoring programs in various formats www.eyesonthebay.net

  8. Coordination Issues – Data Analysis • Evaluate sampling techniques and cruise tracks • Enhance post calibration models • Interpolation Workgroup – coordinate revision of Chesapeake Bay Mainstem interpolator with small scale tributary interpolation • Evaluate methods to assess criteria • Integrate new monitoring technologies with existing long-term monitoring efforts

Shallow Water Monitoring Bay-wide Design for 2003 • Assessment period: April - October • 31 near/real-time Continuous Monitoring sites • 22 sites in Maryland • 9 sites in Virginia • Monthly Water Quality Mapping cruises • Covering 11 tributaries comprising 16 Chesapeake Bay segments • Assess new water quality criteria in shallow water and open water habitats
