  1. Paul’s Ministry & Closing Remarks– 15:14-16:27 Romans 16:19-20 Marks of a Strong Church

  2. Introduction We saw that believers must be able to mark divisive people and guard their hearts against them. However, if the church is to be strong, it must also be able to focus upon that which is good and untainted by evil.

  3. Introduction If a strong church fails to know and do good, it will be penetrated by evil (divisiveness) and it will become a weak church. Therefore, a strong church must be diligently looking for what is good.

  4. Romans 16:19-20For your obedience has become known to all. Therefore I am glad on your behalf; but I want you to be wise in what is good, and simple concerning evil. 20 And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

  5. A Strong Church Lives Obediently Romans 16:19a For your obedience has become known to all. There are three important principles regarding a strong church. The first is that it lives obediently to Our Lord Jesus Christ. This is the opposite of divisive people who live for themselves. Obedience is the reason for the church’s strength. It is obedient to the Lord and doing exactly as He commands to be strong in this world.

  6. A Strong Church Lives Obediently Romans 16:19a For your obedience has become known to all. A strong obedient church is living soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world. Titus 2:12-13 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.

  7. A Strong Church Lives Obediently Romans 16:19a For your obedience has become known to all. A strong obedient church is ministering to the needs of others. Matthew 20:28Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” John 20:21So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”

  8. A Strong Church Lives Obediently Romans 16:19a For your obedience has become known to all. A strong obedient church carries out the Great Commission. Matthew 28:19-20Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

  9. A Strong Church Lives Wisely Romans 16:19b Therefore I am glad on your behalf; but I want you to be wise in what is good, and simple concerning evil. Paul was grateful for the church’s obedience, but he knew that if they were to remain strong, they needed discernment. He wanted them to be “wise in what is good” and “simple concerning evil”. Ephesians 5:15 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise.

  10. A Strong Church Lives Wisely Romans 16:19b Therefore I am glad on your behalf; but I want you to be wise in what is good, and simple concerning evil. Wise speaks of “being skilled in”. “Good” translates two words from the Greek. The first speaks of certainty and truth. The other with the quality of goodness or excellence of an object. Paul wanted his readers to “be skilled in” discerning the things that are truly “good”.

  11. A Strong Church Lives Wisely Romans 16:19b Therefore I am glad on your behalf; but I want you to be wise in what is good, and simple concerning evil. Simple speaks of being unmixed, unadulterated, pure, and/or innocent. In Proverbs the concept of “simple” means not to have experiential knowledge or understanding. We are not to have any association with evil. The strong church focuses upon that which is good, and refuses to allow evil to gain a foothold.

  12. A Strong Church Looks to God’s Deliverence Romans 16:20 And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. A strong Church, while attempting to pursue good and reject evil, lives in a sinful world. This world is under the control of Satan who hates God and His people. The more a church reflects God and His Character into this world, the more Satan opposes it. This battle is greater than ourselves, but it is not greater than God. We look to His deliverance in death, and at His return.

  13. A Strong Church Looks to God’s Deliverence Romans 16:20 And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.  The God of peace will soon give victory over Satan. The meaning of “shortly" means quickly or swiftly. The idea is not that God is coming soon to destroy Satan, but when God acts to deliver His people from evil and divisiveness, Satan will be quickly defeated. His work against God's church will last only for a moment.

  14. A Strong Church Looks to God’s Deliverence Romans 16:20 And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.  Notice that God uses the feet of a strong church to crush Satan. Genesis 3:15 states,“And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.” Satan sought to destroy Jesus, but created the foundation of the church. Jesus will crush Satan, but a faithful church opposes the philosophy, values, and kingdom of evil.

  15. A Strong Church Looks to God’s Deliverence Romans 16:20 And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. Paul concludes with a reminder that regardless how strong a church is, they need the grace of Jesus Christ to continue to stand. When a church takes its eyes off from Christ and all that is “good” and turns their focus to themselves, they cease to be a “strong” church and begin a downward spiral toward worldliness.
