  3. The Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction promotes sustainable responses to the technological, environmental, socioeconomic and cultural issues affecting building and construction. Activities including Holcim Awards competitions, Holcim Forum symposiums, seed funding for building initiatives and grants for research projects encourage innovative approaches to sustainable construction. The objective of the Holcim Foundation is the non-commercial promotion and development of sustainable construction at national, regional and global levels. The Foundation recently donated USD 200,000 to support five research projects being conducted by Ph.D. scholars in Brazil, China, Mexico and Switzerland.

  4. ACC : Setting Example for Sustainable Construction in India This is the first time that both ACC and the Holcim Foundation, have stepped forward with financial support amounting to Rs 1.30 crore for the construction of the headquarters of Development Alternatives at New Delhi.

  5. The headquarters of Development Alternatives The structure is being built by local workers using chiefly local materials that embody little energy. Refined passive and evaporation systems keep the building cool with minimum energy consumption, even in the hot climate.

  8. www.holcimawards.org The main category of the competition is open to architects, planners, engineers, project owners, builders and construction firms that showcase sustainable responses to technological, environmental, socioeconomic and cultural issues affective contemporary building and construction. Projects are eligible for the competition if they have reached an advanced stage of design and construction (or commercial production in the case of materials, products and construction technologies) had not started before July 1, 2010.. Project authors of less than 35 years of age may opt to submit in the "Next Generation" category and/or the main Awards competition depending on the eligibility of their project(s).The Holcim Awards competition is comprised of five regional Holcim Awards (in 2010/11) and the global Holcim Awards (in 2012). The regional Holcim Awards are based on five geographic regions: Europe, North America, Latin America, Africa Middle East, and Asia Pacific.All entries must be completed in English.

  9. www.holcimawards.org Promoters The Holcim Awards is an initiative of the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction based in Switzerland. The competition is conducted in technical cooperation with: - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), Switzerland - Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, USA - Tongji University (TJU) in Shanghai, China - Universidad Iberoamericana (UIA) in Mexico City, Mexico - University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg, South Africa and promoted locally by the ACC.

  10. www.holcimawards.org The total prize moneyfor each cycle of the regional and global Holcim Awards is USD 2 million. The prize money for each of the five regional competitions: is USD 300,000: regional Holcim Award Gold USD 100,000; regional Holcim Award Silver USD 50,000; regional Holcim Award Bronze USD 25,000; 4 regional Acknowledgement prizes with a total budget of USD 75,000 per region. On regional level, juries will also award three “Next Generation” prizes from a total budget of USD 50,000 per region.   12. www.holcimawards.org The projects awarded Holcim Award Gold, Holcim Award Silver, or Holcim Award Bronze in all regional competitions automatically qualify for the global Holcim Awards competition in 2012. The total prize amount for the global competition is USD 500,000 global Holcim Award Gold: USD 200,000; global Holcim Award Silver USD 100,000; global Holcim Award Bronze USD 50,000 and global Holcim Innovation prize USD 150,000). The prizes of the global competition will be presented at the global Holcim Awards ceremony in Switzerland in May 2012.

Juries • www.holcimawards.org The juries of the Holcim Awards competition include independent experts of international stature engaged in the sustainable development of society, building processes, construction materials, and building projects. To enter the Holcim Awards competition at www.holcimawards.org the following information is required ---- • Step 1 - Log-In • Step 2- Information on all project authors • Step 3- Description of the project • Step 4- Images illustrating the project • Step 5- Target issues” and self-assessment • Step 6 - Confirmation An ID and Password will be assigned to each entry once the fields for “Last name” and “Email” are completed for the Main author and contact. The entry can be edited even after submission and re-submitted by clicking on “Submit” at the end of “Step 6” at any time until the close of entries on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 14:00 hrs GMT.

Step 5- Target issues” and self-assessment • Innovation and transferability – “Progress”The project must demonstrate innovation at the forefront of sustainable construction. • Breakthroughs and trend-setting approaches, irrespective of scale, must be • transferable to a range of other applications.- Ethical standards and social equity – “People”The project must adhere to the highest ethical standards and support social equity at all stages of construction, from planning and building processes to long-term impact on the fabric of that community. • Environmental quality and resource efficiency – “Planet” The project must exhibit a sensible use and management of natural resources throughout its life cycle, including operation and maintenance. Long-term environmental concerns, whether pertaining to flows of material or energy, should be an integral part of the built structure.- Economic performance and compatibility – “Prosperity”The project must prove to be economically feasible and innovative as far as the deployment of financial resources is concerned. Funding must promote an economy of means and be compatible with the demands and constraints encountered throughout the construction’s life span.- Contextual and aesthetic impact – “Proficiency”The project must convey a high standard of architectural quality in the way it addresses cultural and physical factors. With space and form of utmost significance, • the construction must have a lasting aesthetic impact on its surrounding environment.
