  1. Transport And Water management EWB Project : Team Grey Adnan Hassan, Adam Bartrop, Graham Thiel, Adam Bailey and Ibrahim Baqer

  2. Initial Ideas • With minimal knowledge, we thought that they get water from a neighbouring village, so we assumed that having a trailer with a water tank mounted on it, would be a convenient idea. • After further research, the case was that the water was already available to the village from the nearby bores, through pumps

  3. Initial Ideas cont. • A mini-bus, which had a water tank integrated inside, so that the people can move around, while also carry water with them. • Since they already have available water, the idea was scrapped.

  4. The Issues with Transportation • Roads in and around Devikulam are generally made of gravel however, the road that runs between Devikulam and the neighboring village of Nadukuppam is a tar road of good quality. • Currently, the most direct road to Pondicherry from Devikulam is along the gravel road. Unfortunately this route is largely impassible during the monsoon season and residents of Devikulam have to take an alternative road to Pondicherry, which adds an additional 26km for the trip each way.

  5. Possible Suggestions: • For transport, we think that having a bus, which travels from the nearest major city, to the devikulam community, on a weekly or fortnightly basis. • For the road, we think that a suitable surface road be made, that goes directly from the community to the main road that heads to the major city. This will cut down a significant amount of travel time and fuel usage.

  6. Solar Electric Buses

  7. Tindo Solar Electric Buses Performance: Motor power nominal – 36 kW Motor power peak – 160 kW Charge power – 36 kW Speed – 76 km/h Capacity: Seated – 25 Wheelchair – 2 Total – 27 • 11 Rechargeable Zebra Batteries which give as much power as a diesel engine • 200 km between recharges under typical urban conditions • When the vehicle slows down, the batteries are no longer driving the vehicle. The motor electronically converts into a generator. The forward motion of the bus then turns the motor/generator to generate electricity which is stored back into the batteries. This is referred to as regenerative braking.

  8. What is Biodiesel? • biodiesel is an alternative to diesel fuel that is made from biological ingredients instead of petroleum. • Biodiesel is made from plant oils or animal fat through a series of chemical reactions. It is both non-toxic and renewable.

  9. How to convert a car to run on biodiesel

  10. Oil Tank • A new oil tank is installed in the car (usually in the trunk)

  11. Hoses • Two hoses cycle hot water from the radiator to heat the vegetable oil before it reaches the engine.

  12. Fuel Gauge • Veggie tank uses a second fuel gauge installed in center console

  13. Switch • A Switch is installed to manually change between regular diesel tank and veggie tank

  14. Oil filter • Fuel filter in engine compartment further filters the veggie oil

  15. How to make biodiesel

  16. Biodiesel is made using the biodiesel kit on the previous slide • To make biodiesel fuel you need lye, 200 milliliters of methanol and 1 litre of vegetable oil.  • You then dissolve the lye in the methanol.  This creates sodium methoxide.  Once the lye is dissolved and the sodium methoxide is created, you need to mix it with the vegetable oil for 20 minutes.

  17. When the blending is sit for 8 hours, this separates the glycerin from the oil • Glycerin is the only bi-product of biodiesel and can used it to make soap as glycerin is the main product found in soaps • Once you have separated the glycerin out you are ready to use your biodiesel fuel.

  18. Advantages • Biodiesel is environmentally friendly. • It can help reduce dependency on foreign oil. • It helps to lubricate the engine itself, decreasing engine wear. • It can be used in almost any diesel with little or no engine modification. • It is safer than conventional diesel.
