  1. “The Week That Changed the World” MATTHEW 21:1-11 26:6-13 Mark 11:1-11 14:3-9 Luke 19:29-44 John 12:1-19

  2. “The Week That Changed the World” The Bible tells us only this about the Death, Burial and Resurrection of Christ. He was crucified and buried on a Friday evening, before the Sabbath day and He lay in the tomb for Three days, Friday evening and Saturday and Sunday, raising from the dead on that Sunday. We do not know the date of this agonizing and yet glorious event. The closest anyone can compute it to being is what we call the month April. IF that were the case, some call this Palm Sunday based on the events that unfolded that Week of His Death.

  3. “The Week That Changed the World” This is the Week God’s Son, Our Savior Died. The Week of God’s Greatest Work – HIS WORK THROUGH THE CROSS It was the Week that changed the World It was the Week that changed ME!

  4. “The Week That Changed the World” Introduction: • When the details are put together, the Bible only reveals 40+ days of the life of Christ. • However, the Week of His Death gives us numerous details about what He did. • We are going to take a look at those Details over the next 4 weeks in this month since so many have their minds on the Death, burial and Resurrection of Christ at this time of the year.

  5. “The Week That Changed the World” I. Sunday, it begins! • Amazingly enough the Week that changed the World began on Sunday and all was accomplished by the following Sunday. • That Sunday is referred to by many as Palm Sunday ( we will see why in a moment) and today, in the eyes of mankind this is Palm Sunday today. • What Christ did beginning this day and continuing through out the Week consumes 1/3 of the N.T. books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and makes up ½ of the Gospel of John.

  6. “The Week That Changed the World” 4. So what is it that makes this Week so important? a. What is it that makes up so much of what these 4 books of the N.T. have to tell us? 5. It is that - “Which Changed The Whole World For Ever More”

  7. “The Week That Changed the World” • Jesus did not spend much time in Jerusalem over the period of His time here on earth. 1. Now He is going there to spend the last Week of His Life here on the earth. 2. He is going there to Die at the end of that Week. • Sunday ; The Week begins with “THE ANOINTING” MATTHEW 26:6-13, Mark 14:3-9, John 12:1-8

  8. “The Week That Changed the World” 1. After the raising of Lazarus and teaching and preaching some very powerful lessons, Jesus retreats into the Country, Ephraim, to avid the Jews until the Proper time when all things would be accomplished. JOHN 11:54. The feast of the Passover is near. JOHN 11:55. 2.We find now in Bethany at the House of Simon the Leper, with Mary, Martha, and Lazarus and the Apostles. 3. Mary Anoints him with Expensive Oil – (years wages)

  9. “The Week That Changed the World” 4. What is the Lesson here? What changed here? A. “THE LESSON OF RECEIVING” a. Jesus has GIVEN during His whole lifetime while here on the earth b. There is no record of Him ever receiving anything until now. c. Jesus TEACHES that it is both good to GIVE and Receive. d. Jesus wants us to Receive that which He gave. LIFE.

  10. “The Week That Changed the World” • Judas’ true character is revealed. JOHN 12:4-6 • Isn’t it amazing how at this juncture the Apostles can criticize Jesus, they rebuke Him harshly and He is about to give His all. • Benevolence is a blessing to us and others, but serving Jesus is of even greater importance, what ever is given to Jesus can never be considered WASTE. • Anything that Love gives to Jesus is Always too little. • Consider what He is about to do!

  11. “The Week That Changed the World” • True Friends are costly. a. Jesus has raised Lazarus earlier (JOHN 11) – that resurrection became a part of the Jew’s motivation to crucify Christ. b. Our good works can sometimes cause others to hate us, even persecute us, but we still must do the works of the Father, the work of the Lord.

  12. “The Week That Changed the World” C. Sunday Continued; • Jesus had never had a “Praise Welcome” before, He plans one here, so after the supper He sends two of the disciples to go get a borrowed donkey to go to Jerusalem and they are to prepare a room for Him to keep the Passover. Matt. 21:1-11, Mark 14:1-11, Luke 19:29-44, John 12:12-25 • The King goes to His Subjects, instead of the subjects going to Him.

  13. “The Week That Changed the World” • He rides into Jerusalem – Triumphal a. In doing so He forces the people to make a decision about Him. “ACCEPT ME or KILL ME” b. They shouted – Hossanana – “Save –we pray” c. His entry fulfilled the prophecy of Zech 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy king cometh unto thee; he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, even upon a colt the foal of an ass.”

  14. “The Week That Changed the World” • As He enters Jerusalem He was heart broken over her LUKE 19:41 – He Weeps for her and she is going to Reject and Kill Him. • 10 thousand memories were about to vanish – time was running out Jerusalem will be totally destroyed (AD 67-70) because they would not Listen. • The Romans ignored Him • His Monumental Triumphal Entry forced His enemies to take action against Him. • While Jerusalem had REFUSED to Listen, The People were FORCED to SEE.

  15. “The Week That Changed the World” • Along comes MONDAY • What a busy Sunday. • Jesus is in Jerusalem now, He did not ride in on a Horse, a symbol of war, He rode in on a donkey, a symbol of “peace”. • However, the issue, as always was Authority. • On this day, MONDAY, Jesus would present His Credentials. MATTHEW 21:18-22, Mark 11: 12-14, 20-26

  16. “The Week That Changed the World” E. Jesus cursed the Fig Tree a. He was hungry, saw the fig tree, full of leaves, but no fruit. b. Disappointed in It’s barrenness, He curses it. e. This is not the Jesus that most of us have created in our minds. His action on this occasion is only one of two very DESTRUCTIVE miracles He ever preformed during His ministry (See Matt 8:28-34 - demons are cast into the swine and run into the water and drown).

  17. “The Week That Changed the World” f. The tree presented to be full of fruit with it’s leaves. It did not. The Sin was one of Pride and Hypocrisy. g. The Jewish leaders claimed to be of God, They were not. h. The Jews should have been humbled to be called of God, they were not. Instead they thought they were superior and invincible. i. Jesus demonstrated His Authority and the consequence of trying to show yourself to something that you are not.

  18. “The Week That Changed the World” • He cleanses the Temple. Matthew 21:12-16 a. Don’t do things in is house that He does not authorize. b. He begins teaching and healing – demonstrates His Deity. c. The Temple was to be reverenced, but it was being abused. He cleared it out stating my House shall be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a robber’s den.” Matt. 21:13. G. He continues to Teach JOHN 12: 21- 50

As He continues to teach – His Father speaks for a third time from Heaven – To Jesus it was a promise of Victory and that Satan would be cast down - JOHN 12:28 & 32 b. but in spite of all His glorious teaching and mighty miracles the religious leaders refused to believe, the conclusion “…they loved the approval of men rather than the approval of God.” JOHN 12:42, 43

  20. “The Week That Changed the World” III. TUESDAY IS HERE • Tuesday is the busiest day of all the days • The Temple has been cleansed, the Jewish leaders “pocket books” have been hit. He has their Attention. • They wanted to know where He got His authority? • If He answered “God” He lost – Blasphemy • If He answered “Man” – Had no right • He asked where did John get his Authority

  21. “The Week That Changed the World” 7. They refused to answer Him, so He did not answer them. MATTHEW 21:23-27, Mark 11:27-33, Luke 20:1-8 8. They wanted to know where He had “gone to school”? They soon got an answer to that. 9. He taught three parables in this context. a. The Parable of 2 Sons – Repentance Matt 28:28-32 b. The “wicked renters who killed the landlord’s son – how he would be rejected Matt.21:3-44

  22. “The Week That Changed the World” c. Parable of the Marriage feast showing how some would reject His Invitation. Matt. 22:2-14 i. When those who are close will not come go invite those you do not know. The religious leaders would not come, but the common people did. 10. The DEBATES BEGIN; a. The Herodians and the Pharisees hate each other but they hate Christ more. They preset a trick question regarding the Tax MATTHEW 22:21 “render to Caesar…” They were Shocked into silence

  23. “The Week That Changed the World” b. The Sadducees came to Him, offered silliness i. He said “you don’t know the scriptures, you don’t know the power of God. Matt. 22:29, Mk 12:24 c. The Pharisees return with a lawyer – question – “What is the greatest commandment?” Matt. 22:34-40, Mark 12:28-34 d. Jesus asks them who the Messiah really was, they have no answer. Matt 22:41-46, Mark 12:35-37 Luke 20:41-44

  24. “The Week That Changed the World” • The Debates End and A Pointed Sermon is Delivered. a. It is the most scathing Sermon in the Scriptures MATTHEW 23 i. He calls them “snakes” and “Blind Guides” ii. He pronounces 7 “woes” upon them, they are hypocrites. iii. “How can you escape the condemnation of Hell? iv. Then He Cries Matthew 23:37, Luke 13:34

  25. “The Week That Changed the World” 12. Prophecy and Preaching a. The disciples ask three questions about the fall of the Temple. i. When will these things be, What is the sign of your coming, When will the end of the age be. Jesus continues to teach Matt 24, Mark 13, Luke 21 b. THE MESSAGE OF THE WIDOW AND THE 2 MITES, with all the hypocrisy around this is what true giving is about. Mark 12:41-44, Luke 21:1-4

  26. “The Week That Changed the World” c. The trouble was still ahead, but Jesus continued to teach that day – Three more parables. i. Being prepared – The 10 Virgins ii. Using your talents – Responsibility iii. Parable of the Sheep and Goats - Judgment Matthew 25 No preaching was ever a pointed as the Lord’s, but His preaching fell on deaf ears – What a Day!!!

  27. “The Week That Changed the World” IV. Wednesday, Thursday – Friday • After such a busy Tuesday he seems to “take the day off” on Wednesday . The silence of Wednesday is “Thunderous” to the Jews. • Jesus may not have been busy that day, but Judas was, setting up the betrayal of the Lord. • Knowing our Lord He was most likely in prayer on Wednesday.

  28. “The Week That Changed the World” • Thursday – He prepares for the Passover Feast. a. Jesus awakes this day never to sleep again. i. The Hour has come b. Today He prepares for the Passover Matthew 26:17-19, Mark 14:12-16, Luke 22: 7-13 c. He has a deep interest in eating the Passover with the Apostles LUKE 22 : 14-16 i. His approaching suffering – His Betrayal ii. Last Passover iii. He now will become the “continuous Passover” iv. He willinitiate His “Last Supper” Matthew 26:17-30

  29. “The Week That Changed the World” C. Thursday Night & Friday– The Passover Begins on Friday a. Jesus is about to die and the Apostles are fussing over who will be greatest - Luke 22:24-30 b. Jesus handles this by Him washing their feet John 13: 1-17 c. Peter has an outburst over this and the Lord silences him also; Jesus tells Peter “If I do not wash you – you will have no part of Me.” Jn 13:8 d. He identifies His betrayer – Judas – Matthew 26: 21-25 - John 13:18-30

  30. “The Week That Changed the World” e. The Last Supper is initiated. Matthew 26:26-29, Mark 14:22-25, Luke 22:17-20 D. The Final Details 1. Jesus now centers on Peter who has vowed to never run our on Him. Jesus tells Peter that he will deny Him Matthew 26:31 – 35, Mark 14:29,30, John 13:36-38, Luke 22:31-34 2. He goes the Garden to Pray. Matthew 26:36- 46, Mark 14:32 – 42, Luke 22:39 – 46 John 18:1

  31. “The Week That Changed the World” • The battle of all Eternity is now being fought between God and Satan. • Jesus is the Sacrifice • The Winner takes all. • Humanity is at stake. Jesus fights to conquer Satan, sin, death and Hell ….. ALONE. • On the Cross He would cry, “My God, My God, Why have you forsaken me?”Matt. 27:46., Mark 15:34 • He will be made to be what God hates – Sin!

  32. “The Week That Changed the World” K. The Eternal Wrath of God will poured out upon Him • For the only time in all eternity, God the Father and Christ the Son would be separated. • Never the less, Jesus did not want out of this arrangement to save mankind. He was never arrogant in His Humanity. • He died on the Cross that Week for You and Me THE WEEK THAT CHANGED THE WORLD.

  33. “The Week That Changed the World” Conclusion: • What a Week (And we did cover every detail) • In this Week this God - forsaken Son is the Centerpiece of the Christian Faith. • He “sweat blood” this week in the Garden. • He shed it on the Cross. • Next Week – “It is Finished”

  34. What MUST You Do to Be Saved? • Hear The Word Of God Romans 10:17 • Believe His Word Mark 16:16, John 8:24 • Repent of your sins Luke 13:3, Acts 2:38 • Confess your belief Romans 10:10, Acts 8:37 • Be Baptized Mark 16:16, Acts 2:38 For the Remission of Your Sins Acts 22:16 Galatians 3:26, 27 • Live Faithfully Titus 2:11-14
