  1. Creating Mailing Lists Using the Miami-Dade County Public Library Online Databases

  2. First, go to www.mdpls.org

  3. First, go to www.mdpls.org Then, Click Databases & More

  4. Now Click Addresses, Phone Numbers

  5. Click ReferenceUSA

  6. Enter the Barcode from the back of your Library Card and your password, then click Log In.

  7. Once here, Click U.S. Databases

  8. We want to create a list, so click on Custom Search

  9. To perform a good search, I need to know what I want to find. In this case I want a list of about 40 owners of plumbing companies that have between 5 and 50 employees. First, I’ll click on Executives

  10. I only want to search for the Owners of companies, so I’ll click the, “Executive Title,” Box

  11. Several options show up, but I’ll type, “Owner” in the, “Filter Choices” Box.

  12. That leaves only “Owner” in the list, so I’ll click on it to choose it

  13. I can now see that it has been chosen. If I accidentally choose the wrong thing I can click it again an it will be removed.

  14. If I click on “Update Count” I can see that the list has already become more narrow.

  15. Finally, I’m going to click on the Expand/Collapse button to make some extra space on the screen.

  16. The same basic steps are the same for each additional area, so I’ll cover the highlights of the rest. Next I want to search for plumbers so I click on “Business Type” and check by Keyword. Then I’ll type in “Plumber” and click “LOOKUP”

  17. I can then click on “Plumbing Contractors” and see that it goes into the selected list. If I click on “Update Count” I can see The field has narrowed again.

  18. Next, I’ll search by “Geography” and I’ll choose to search by the “County.” You could choose another method, such as by zip code. After going through the steps to select Miami-Dade, I’ll update the count again. You don’t have to update the count each time, however, it helps to show that you are narrowing the field.

  19. If the fields on the left get to be too much, I can collapse those by clicking the small circle by the field name. The green check shows that I still have something selected, however. I only want plumbing companies that have between 5 and 50 employees, so I select all of those ranges. After I update the count and see I have 48, I decide to see the list, so I click “View Results”

  20. Now I can see the companies, 25 at a time. By clicking the top check box I can select all of the ones shown to be downloaded. Then I’ll click the “Next Page” Button to see the next set.

  21. Now I click the top check box again to select the next set. The first set I clicked are still selected. Once I select them, I’m ready to click download and get my list.

  22. I want my list downloaded directly into an Excel Spreadsheet, so I click Excel. I also want to be able to choose extra fields that are downloaded, so I’ll click on “Custom”

  23. After I click on, “Custom” options appear. Some are already pre-selected for me.

  24. I also want the “Executive Title” in my list, so I click on it.

  25. And I want to scroll down and select the “Phone Number Combined” Field. (This gives me phone numbers with the area code included, so it’s one 10-digit number)

  26. If I click on the fields in my “Selected” list, I can also drag them up and down to change the order they appear in my downloaded list. I like the order shown here. After my list is in order, I’m ready to download, and click Download Records

  27. In my internet browser, Google Chrome, the downloaded file shows up here. Your may have to pick a location to save the file, just remember where. Next, just click to open it.

  28. And here you go! A list of 48 quality plumbing contractors ready for merging, calling, copying and pasting, etc. There are obviously tons of other uses for the database and its search capacities, but this should get you off to a good start. Happy Searching!
