ANTECEDENTES HISTORICOS • La Escuela Normal Superior de Medellín fue creada en enero de 1851, bajo la dirección del doctor Benito Alejandro Balcàzar, discípulo del sabio Francisco José de Caldas. En esta etapa inicial la Escuela Normal funcionó en el edificio que hoy ocupa el Paraninfo de la Universidad de Antioquia contiguo al templo de San Ignacio. Durante este siglo hubo varias interrupciones a causa de problemas, cerrando sus puertas en varias oportunidades.

Desde 1912, la Escuela Normal ha venido funcionando sin ninguna interrupción. en 1960 por decreto del presidente Alberto Lleras Camargo, se confirió a esta casa del saber el carácter de plantel piloto. en 1975, la normal nacional de varones se diversifica y atendiendo a la gran demanda educativa se crea una jornada adicional, que rigió por decreto 2854 de 1974, dando oportunidad de acceso al bachillerato académico.
