  1. GT Research 9/25/13 2A • Take out & leave HW to the side • WU #6: Which research design would be most appropriate to answer the following question and why? (Copy question) “What are 6th grade students homework habits?” • When finished, work with group to identify the design of each question on the “Sample Question” sheet.

  2. GT Research 10/2/13 B Day • WU #7: Copy the question below and refer to “What is Primary Research Process” sheet to write a hypothesis: What are 6th grade students’ homework habits?

  3. Questionnaire/ Survey • Series of questions presented to a sample of subjects orally or in writing • Advantages: • best for clearly defined questions • allows for large samples • subjects can remain anonymous • less time-consuming • Limitations: • not as flexible • limited to predetermined questions • may be misunderstood or ignored

  4. Guidelines for writing surveys: • Focus on the research question at all times! • Questions must be clear • Subjects responding are doing you a favor • Use the best question type for the job (consider expected responses & ease of collecting and analyzing data)

  5. What are sixth grade students’ homework habits? • Design a measurement instrument that will yield data to answer the research question • Finish composing 5 or more questions for your questionnaire using a variety of question types.

  6. GT Research 10/2/13 A Day **Take out your HW – Turn to your neighbor draw a line under the last question that he/she wrote. Write your initials in the margin by this line. WU #8: Copy this: Hypotheses should be in 3rd person – they should NOT contain any “I’s”! • Refer to your hypothesis in WU #7 and edit to REMOVE 1st person (I think, I predict, etc.) • Rewrite it, if necessary, under the statement you just copied

  7. HW – Due next class • Finish your HW survey and administer it to 10 people between now and next class. • Survey people during lunch, recess, or over the phone from home – NOT during class time. • Administer survey orally and record answers; or type and make copies of your survey to distribute.
