  2. Why Write? • The SAT writer, along with almost every college professor in the United States think that writing skills are essential to success in college and beyond. If you do not believe us here is the official word from the people who write the SAT. College board and its many members strongly believe that making the writing section required and not optional will send a strong message about the importance of writing for the success in the college and the workplace. In other words, good writing equals success in school and work.

  3. About the SAT Essay • · You will have 25 minutes to plan and handwrite an essay. · The essay prompt is always based on one or two quotations from literature or scholarly writings. · There is no one correct answer to the prompt. The prompts are written so there can be more than one response to the issue. · You will have neither time nor opportunity to do research. Instead, you must draw on your experiences and what you have learned in school to support your point of view. · Essays are scored by experienced high school teachers and college faculty, not computers. Keep in mind that the scores are professionals. They are not easily impressed, but they will appreciate your logical thinking and clear handwriting. · Essays are scored on a scale of 1 to 6 (6 is highest) by 2 scorers. Their combined scores will yield a final score anywhere from 2 to 12. (More on the scale later.)

Sat Scoring Guidelines • Score of 6: Demonstrates clear and consistent mastery · Effectively and insightfully develops a point of view · Well organized and clearly focused · Exhibits skillful use of language · Demonstrates meaningful variety in sentence structure · Almost no errors Score of 5: Demonstrates reasonably consistent mastery · Effectively develops a point of view · Well organized · Exhibits facility in the use of language · Demonstrates variety in sentence structure · Generally free of errors Score of 4: Demonstrates adequate mastery · Develops a point of view · Exhibits adequate but inconsistent facility in the use of language · Has some errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics

Sat Scoring Guidelines • Score of 3: demonstrates developing mastery · Develops a point of view on the issue, critical thinking, kind of inconsistent, and uses inadequate examples reasons and other evidence as support. · Limited in organization, demonstrates lapses incoherence of ideas. · Lacks variety, poor sentence structure. · Errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics. Score of 2: Demonstrates little mastery · Point of view that is vague or seriously limited, and demonstrates weak critical thinking. · Poorly organized. · Limited vocabulary usage or incorrect word choice. · Frequent problems in sentence structure. · Errors in Grammar. Score of 1: Demonstrates very little or no mastery · No viable point · Disorganized · Displays fundamental errors in vocabulary. · Contains pervasive errors in grammar.

  6. What Scorers Will Look For? • Point of view- express your stance or position on the issue—your opinion. • Critical thinking -offer original ideas connect between ideas, and present interesting and specific examples. • Appropriateness-responds to the prompt with the right attitude-presents ideas and use language that suits the topic and the situation. • Organization and focus- presents ideas in a logical and clear way. Your response should stay on target. • Skillful of language- correctly use appropriate vocabulary. Use words you know that suit the topic. Make sure you understand the vocabulary you use. • Sentence structure-use complete sentences and varied sentence structure. All your sentences should have subjects and verb; you should avoid fragments or run-ons. You also should use a variety of sentences structures to make the easy interesting to read. • Mechanical convention-use corrects spelling and punctuation. In other words, check for silly mistakes. Small errors can cost you big!
