World Atlas How to Edit Your World Maps Editing Points • To select or delete a group of features, click the group’s label or red dot • Ungrouping once will detach the label from the group • Ungrouping a second time will separate the selection into sub-groups (if any) • Further ungrouping will allow individual items to be selected and edited • Regroup the selection once editing is completed • If a map takes a long time to refresh when moved, it means the map has become corrupt by a process of copying and pasting as pictures with fills • A map like this is unrecoverable and would need to be recreated from the original World Atlas pack • Ungroup as far as you can • Select the target and try to edit the points by right-clicking • If the option to edit the points does not appear, it means the original shape was probably created as a compound path in Illustrator, which in turn means it was created by using one shape like a cookie-cutter to create the shape of another, and its format still relies on the relationship of those original shapes • To overcome this: • Make sure the target selection has been ungrouped as far as possible • Set the colour of the selected shape to no fill. This will prevent the following process from generating multiple layers according to the outline and colour properties of the relationship • Cut the object (Ctrl + X) • Select Edit > Paste Special > Picture (Windows Metafile) • Ungroup the selection as far as it will go • The process generates a default invisible background, so click in a blank space near the selection, and when a transparent rectangle is selected, press Delete • Now you should be able to right-click on the outline of the target shape and format it accordingly • Re-group the selection back to the level you require 1

World Atlas How to Edit Your World Maps Cropping the Picture Temporary Cosmetic Solution • Important consideration: • Due to the level of detail involved in the creation of these resources, editing the points is likely to generate more points than is feasible to edit in this way. In this case, please explain the delay to your client and forward the request to me (nick.rumbelow@ morganstanley.com) or London Creative Services at lncs@morganstanley.com • If you would like access to the Illustrator file for any map, please contact London Creative Services • If you need to crop the map, do not have time to submit it as a request, and editing the points is not an option: • Edit the map as required • Make a copy of the slide • Copy the edited map from the first slide • Delete the map from the second slide and replace it by using Paste Special > Windows Metafile • Now you can crop the map as required • Move the original map to the back of the presentation and advise your client to keep it for future editing • Please note: • This is suggested only as a cosmetic solution • Please forward the edited slide to London Creative Services with the job details, and an authentic version can be created • The new version can then be returned and added to the World Atlas collection for future use 2
