  1. Alternative power WORLD AT RISK Learning Intentions: To understand the role of nuclear powerand identify the advantages and disadvantages To evaluate the role of nuclear power as a the fuel of the future

  2. What do you know already? • On the post-it notes I would like you to write what you already know about nuclear power • You then need to decide whether your are for or against nuclear power and place your post-it note in the correct column

  3. Currently in the Uk • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3h0OFZVRWQU

  4. Nuclear power in the uk • Nuclear power currently generates around a sixth of the UK’s electricity. • As of 2011, the United Kingdom operates 19 nuclear reactors at nine locations. The country also operates a nuclear reprocessing plant at Sellafield. • The United Kingdom's first commercial nuclear power reactor began operating in 1956 and, at its peak in 1997, 26% of the nation's electricity was generated from nuclear power. • Since then a number of stations have closed and the share had declined to 19.26% by 2004 and approximately 16% by 2009.

  5. The future of nuclear power • Ministers have announced plans for the next generation of UK nuclear plants. • The government confirmed a list of eight sites it deems suitable for new power stations by 2025, all of which are adjacent to existing nuclear sites.

  6. SO why Nuclear power? • Will the lights go out in 2023? That is the question facing UK electricity supply companies • Cheap domestic gas supplies from the North Sea are running low, and overseas oil and gas prices have risen dramatically since 2004 • The UK government has to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20% of the 1990, so reliance on fossil fuels has to change if these targets are to be met

  7. Is Nuclear power the way forward? • You will each be given a stance, either for or against nuclear power, you must then work together using the information provided to construct an argument • As you are researching your stance you need to fill in your side of the table • Be prepared to argue your opinion

  8. Nuclear power ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

  9. Have your opinions changed? • I would like you to collect your post-it from the start of the lesson and add any new information you know to it • You then need to decide whether your are for or against nuclear power in the UK and place your vote with your post it
