Obama and Rouhani Phone Call • U.S. President Barack Obama and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani • First direct conversation between leaders in Washington and Tehran since 1979 • Raises possibility that a deal can be reached over Iran’s controversial nuclear program • Rouhani tells reporters • that his election will help better Iran and the West’s relationship • wants a quick resolution to the nuclear issue • West leaders believe that the country’s nuclear program is designed to produce weapons • Iranian leaders say it is purely peaceful • Video
Malala Yousafzai • In October 2012, the Taliban attempted to assassinate Malala Yousafzai who was an advocate for girl’s education in Pakistan • This month, one year after her injury, she was awarded the EU’s Sakharov Award and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize • Award went to the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons • Taliban responds: “We are delighted” • Yousafzai responds she felt she did not deserve the honor yet • Video
Standoff over Obamacare Results in Government Shutdown • October 1st • Congress fails to agree on a budget • Largely due to Obamacare, or Affordable Care Act • Republicans want to pass a bill that will delay the Obamacare act • Senate will NOT pass these bills because they are PRO Obamacare • Disagreement= shutdown • Due to shutdown • National parks and museums are closed • Non-essential government jobs are shut down (ex: NASA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) • 800,000 federal workers out of jobs (paychecks delayed) • October 16th: Day 16 • Senate optimistic that an agreement is coming close • Video
Common App Glitches • The Common Application is used by over 1 million students and 500 colleges and universities • In 2013, CA4 was introduced to phase out paper applications • The new Common App has been experiencing major problems • Glitches have already caused schools to push back their admissions deadlines
Austin City Limits • The annual Austin City Limits music festival came to a close this past weekend • This was the first year that included two weekends • The second Sunday was cancelled due to flash flood warnings and customers were reimbursed for a third of the ticket price
UT VS OU Game • Texas beat Oklahoma this past weekend in Dallas • Quarterback Case McCoy really stepped up to the plate and revived the Longhorn spirit • Going into the game, the odds were against the Longhorns but they ended up victorious over the Sooners with a score of 36-20
