  1. Introduction to Microsoft Excel 2007 - Home Tab Learningcomputer.com

  2. Home Tab • The Home Tab is by far the most important tab in Microsoft Excel 2007 • It contains all the commands that are commonly used • This includes formatting, alignment, inserting and deleting rows or columns, sorting and filtering numbers • In addition you can apply graphical styles, conditional formatting effects and have the ability to find and replace text • For this lesson, we will be using a Grade Book from one of my classes • Let’s take a look at the Workbook data – rows/cols

  3. Clipboard Group • This group includes commands like Cut, Copy and Paste  • Using the Cut (keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+X) command you can remove data • You can also use the Copy (Ctrl+C) command to do the same. However Copy will leave the original data in place • Using the Paste (Ctrl+V) command, you can then insert data to a new location • Using these commands, I am going to add a new student (row 15) and add Chapter 6 points (column H)

  4. Font Group • Use the Font group to change the text properties • You can choose from options like font size, font type, bold, italicize, underline etc. • We will do the following: • Change “Grades for Access 2007” to font 14 • Also make rows 3 and 4 bold and italicize • Finally make the students background yellow and names red • We will also use Format Painter to change the Average cell

  5. Alignment Group • With this group, you can control the vertical and horizontal position of data in your worksheet • You can also perform merge and center command plus do word wrapping • Using the Alignment group, we’ll try the following actions: • Vertically center “Grades for Access 2007” • Move text in rows 3 and 4 in the Horizontal center • Wrap text in the last row • Last but not the least, perform a merge and center on the first row

  6. How about some calculations? • We are going to switch gears do the following: • Sum up all the student scores in column L • Calculate the percentages achieved in column M • Computer the average • After this we will go back to the Number group and change format for: • Percentage column • Averages to two decimal places

  7. Styles Group – Lots of cool stuff • First we will play around with Format as Table • Next we shall try really cool feature of Conditional Formatting with the following: • Using Above Average under Top/Bottom Rules • Next we will try data bars using blue • Lastly we will try customs setting and group the students into three scales • We will clear the formatting and then try a few options under cell styles.

  8. Editing Group • The final option is the Editing group  • Using this you can do the following: • Perform simple calculations • Clear text or formatting • Sort and filter data • Find and replace text • We will try to sort my grade book by the student name • In addition I want to change Chap to Lesson in row 2
