Biosafety cabinets work as the storage medium and safe working area for the harmful or contagious agents. So, before buying these cabinets, get the right information on the same. The list of the most commonly available categories & variants of biological safety cabinets is given below. Class I BSCs Class I biosafety cabinets are the basic level of the biological safety cabinets. Class I BSC provides sheer cover for personnel and the environment. But there is no protection for the product that might be contaminated already or prone to any type of contamination. Class I BSC are used in biosafety levels 1 to level 3. Class II BSCs Class II biosafety cabinets offer all three protection layers: personnel or researcher, product or the agent in use, and environment. Class II cabinets are further classified into three types: A, B, and C.
Type A: In A1, there is a minimum airflow velocity of 75 fpm. But in type A2, the same is of 100 fpm. Both types A1 and A2, use HEPA-filters to exhaust the air out in the lab. Otherwise, there can be a canopy connection for the same. Where A1 is suitable for biological without toxic elements, A2 is best for minute hazardous agents to sterilize or store the same. Type B: Both B1 and B2 maintain the minimum airflow velocity of 100 fpm. B1 is best for agents with minute hazardous contamination and radionuclides traces. Whereas B2 is best for the same agents but with a higher degree for both types of contamination. Type C: This is a unique brand of BSCs or biological safety cabinets in demand. They have the facilities to act as type A and B cabinets. That’s possible because it can be type A while the airflow is inside and type B when the air has to be exhausted outside in the lab. Class III BSCs These are the famous gloved boxes. These ventilated biological safety cabinets are tightly packed. Researchers even often wear PPE kits while attending or storing any severely hazardous element inside these cabinets. For instance, these cabinets are mostly used to take care of the samples of the patients suffering from any pandemic like COVID-19. These cabinets can handle any biosafety chemicals needing the containment of level 1 to level 4.
