  2. Puritan New England • Puritans create an “New England” • Puritans come to America to practice their religious beliefs freely • They seek to build a model society • A close relationship exists between church and state

  3. Puritan New England • Dissent in the Puritan community • The Puritans are intolerant of other religious beliefs • Dissenters form the colony of Rhode Island • In Rhode island they establish the seperation of church and state and religious tolerance

  4. Settlement in the Middle Colonies • The Dutch found New Netherland • The Dutch establish New Netherland to expand their trade • New Netherland opens the door to a variety of people • England takes over New Netherland to remove the Dutch wedge separating its colonies

  5. Settlement in the Middle Colonies • The Quakers settle Pensylvania • William Penn founds Pennsylvania on Quaker principles of tolerance • His respect of native American land rights promotes peace • Penn recruits settlers from all over Europe
