  1. CV for Promotion Provide inside & outside referees Use “genuine” outside referees (not someone who left Hopkins last year) Do not provide referees “in excess”

  2. CV for promotion • The referee does NOT get your chair's letter to the Committee • Explain and expand any activity, administrative role, clinical items or honors which may not , as an isolated item, give full value to your contributions

  3. CV for Promotion • Make certain that your CV matches your “niche”: • If you have a training or career-starting grant, where are the publications from that grant? • Clearly explain your role as a “program builder” • Document your role as a teacher/mentor

  4. CV for Promotion • You can publish even if your work is not suitable for Cell • Describe your program, how it developed and how it works, how it improved patient care or teaching • Describe your new curriculum and how it has improved students’ understanding or performance

  5. CV for Promotion • Problems: how can you show independence as a member of a large group, or as a protégé of a famous scholar? • Problem: what are your options if your clinical duties leave you no time for the other activities needed for promotion?

  6. CV for Promotion • Is your expectation for promotion realistic? • Does “failure” really make you a stronger person?

  7. CV for Promotion • Does your Department have an internal promotion committee? Why not? • Use the resources listed here and those in the Dean’s Office • Take the opportunity to participate in Departmental and JHMI committees • You, your chair or your mentor should see that you are active in leadership roles in organizations relevant to your clinical or research interests
