Legislature Common features • All have 2 houses except one and they only meet for part of the year • House of Representatives -2 per district (county) • Senate -1 per county • Term of office -2 years • Qualifications: must be 18+, a qualified elector, a US citizen, a resident of the state for 1+ years.

  3. Legislature • Differences (from US Congress) with bill procedure: • No rules committee in the House • Make amendments on the 2nd reading only • No filibusters • Governor has 5 days to do something with a bill http://www.legislature.idaho.gov/

Executive • All offices are elected in most states. • However some states do allow the governor several appointments • Term: 4 years –elected on the off Presidential years • Qualifications – • 30 years for Governor/Lt. Governor • 25 years for all other positions • US citizens • Resident of Idaho for 2+

  6. Executive • Other positions • Attorney General –lawyer for the state • Secretary of State- record keeper, runs elections • State Treasurer –banker-takes in money/cut checks • State Auditor –accountant/supervises spending • State Superintendent of Public Instruction
