  1. Communication Aids in MND Dr Olga Konwisorz GPST1 February 15th, 2011

  2. Patients with diseases such as MND may experience problems with communication as their disease progresses • Various communication aids can be used to help patients in communicating with loved ones and professionals • Organizations such as the Motor Neurone Disease Association (http://www.mndassociation.org/) may be able to lend these to patients

  3. Some examples of communication aids • small, robust, portable text-to-speech communication aids such as LighWriter and DynaWrite allow patients to type what they want to say and the device will translate this into speech or family can read what is typed on a separate screen

  4. Some examples of communication aids • This device allows patients who have lost motor function in their hands and are no longer able to type to use eye movements or blinking to communicate

  5. Communication board • If patients can move their hands then a simple communication board may suffice. • Communication boards usually contain the letters of the alphabet, common words or phrases and pictures of common items and/or actions. Individuals with limited or no verbal communication skills simply point to the letters to spell words or to the pictures to express an idea or desire.

  6. Funding • The MND association can provide equipment loans and funding for rental fees.
