About the Author • Sujatta Bhatt was born in Pune, India in 1956. • At the age of 12, she Emigrated to the Us. • This poem was written when she was at university in America. • She wrote in both English and Gujarati, Gujarati being her ‘Mother Tongue’. • The effect of two cultures\languages interacting in her mind scared and intrigued her.

  4. Structure • It has one verse . The poem being one verse represents one thought and being in this case Sujatta. • It’s written in 2 different languages which shows the cultural dilemma she is trying to convey in the poem. • The use of 2 different languages in one verse tells us that they are able to function together, representing her life. • The poem can be broken down in three different parts

  5. Images • What does tongue mean\do? • What does two tongues imply? • Why does she compare her tongue to a plant?

  6. “Tongue” in your groups, think about the different meanings the word has. You have 2 minutes. Tongue??? Tongue??? Tongue???

Extended Metaphor In part 3, we see the poet comparing her tongue to a plant, why is this? • A plant is a living organism which needs nurturing like the poet’s mother tongue. • Plants die in the wrong environment – Sujata Bhatt wrote this poem when she was living in the USA. • it grows back, a stump of a shoot • grows longer, grows moist, grows strong veins, • it ties the other tongue in knots, • the bud opens, the bud opens in my mouth, • it pushes the other tongue aside. • Every time I think I've forgotten, • I think I've lost the mother tongue, • it blossoms out of my mouth.
