  1. APA Format Presented By, Maranda Lloyd

  2. No. Exciting/Fun?! YES!! Practical? “move the idea forward with a minimum of distractionand a maximum of precision”

  3. Today • Brief overview of the APA Format • Basic Structure Samples • Citation Review • Mini Quiz

  4. What is APA? • A writing style. • APA was developed by the American Psychological Association. For school purposes, it is mostly used in Psychology and Science classes. It's important to review the proper way to cite APA, as not to confuse it with MLA, because while similar, they do have their differences.

  5. Why use APA? • Allows readers to cross-reference your sources easily • Provides consistent format within a discipline • Gives you credibility as a writer • Protects yourself from plagiarism

  6. Basic Structural Samples Format: • Double-space. • Use 1”margins. • Number pages in upper right-hand corner, beginning with the title page. • Before the page number, use an abbreviated form of the title as a header. • 12-pt Times Roman or Courier are preferred typefaces.

  7. Title Page and Abstract Components APA requires (If requested) • The manuscript page header • The running head • The title • The author's name • The author's affiliation • An APA abstract is basically a short summary of the paper, not over 120 words.

  8. 2 Major Concerns: References • Cited in Reference list • Cited in text

  9. In-text Citations

  10. APA uses bracketed in-text citations, but they differ slightly from the MLA method. Quotations that mention the name of the author in the-text should be formatted as follows: • According to Mokey (1987), "Radishes are finest when processed by dozers" (p. 97). Quotations not preceded by an author name also have to include the name within the brackets like so: • He argued, "It's a very great to thing to leave one's home and see the world" (Matt, 1988, p. 43). Longer quotations should be made in a free standing block of text with half-inch margins, and with no quotation marks. Paraphrases follow the same citation style.

  11. Reference List • A list of every source that you make reference to in your essay. • Provides the information necessary for a reader to locate and retrieve any sources cited in your essay. • Each retrievable source cited in the essay must appear on the reference page, and vice versa. • Arrange entries in alphabetical order by surname. • If you have several works by the same author…arrange by year of publication • Same first author and different second or third author…

  12. Reference List • All lines after the first line of each entry in your reference list should be indented one-half inch from the left margin. This is called hanging indentation. • Reference list entries should be alphabetized by the last name of the first author of each work. For multiple articles by the same author, from earliest to most recent. • Present the journal title in full. Maintain the punctuation and capitalization that is used by the journal in its title. • Capitalize all major words in journal titles. • Italicize titles of longer works such as books and journals. Do not italicize, underline, or put quotes around the titles of shorter works such as journal articles or essays in edited collections.

  13. Book Gravetter, F. J., & Forzano, L. B. (2005). Research methods for the behavioral sciences (2nd ed.). Belmont, CA: Wadsworth/Thomson. • Journal paginated by issue Schmidt, J. R., & Cheesman, J. (2005). Dissociating stimulus-stimulus and response-response effects in the Stroop task. Canadian Journal of Experimental Psychology, 59(2), 132-138. • Article From an Online Periodical Stroop, J. R. (1935). Studies of interference in serial visual reactions [Electronic version]. Journal of Experimental Psychology, 121(1), 15-23. (Note: if there is no print version available, include date of access and URL after the issue: Retrieved July 5, 2005, from http://www... Use the exact URL of the article if possible, unless you have retrieved an article from a newspaper’s site (i.e., www.newyorktimes.com) • Non-Periodical Web Document, List as many as possible of the following: Author’s name. Date of publication (use “n.d.” if no date is known or available). Title of the document in italics. Date of access. URL directly to the source Chovil, I. (n.d.). What is schizophrenia? Retrieved November 6, 2005, from http://www.chovil.com/first.html
