Cocoa Beach High Jr./Sr. High School started a new Academy Of International Business (AIB) in August of 2006. • Mrs. Friedlander is the Academy Director. • The Academy offers students a small learning community and multiple field trips to learn about business in the real world. • Another feature offered is a 150 hour internship for students in their senior year at a local business. • Applications are now being accepted for 9th and 10th graders. • Our web site is: http://www.cbhs.brevard.k12.fl.us/Teachers/Friedlander/academy.html

  4. What Classes Will Students Take in the Academy?

  5. First Class – Computing for College and Careers • Students in the Academy begin by taking the Computing for College and Careers class. • Students work in a state-of-the-art computer lab and learn advanced features of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. • Students can take an industry certified exam and become Microsoft Office Specialists in Word. • Students create flyers and Academy brochures in Microsoft Publisher. • They even learn Microsoft Moviemaker and produce videos featuring students, field trips and why they joined the Academy.

  6. Second Class – Accounting I • Students will learn various bookkeeping methods and the principles of recording business transactions. • Many colleges that offer Business majors also require Accounting. • Students learn how to maintain accurate financial records and make profit and loss statements, balance check registers and process debits and credits.

  7. Third Class – International Business Systems • Students develop an understanding of the global economy, economics and customs which affect business internationally. • Students will explore foreign currencies and import/export agreements. • The use of computers, multi-media and the internet will be key components of this course.

  8. Academy Advisory Committee • The Advisory Committee is an integral part of the Academy • Current businesses serving on the Advisory Committee are: • Brevard Community College • Brevard Workforce Development Board • Canaveral Port Authority • City of Cape Canaveral • City of Cocoa Beach • Cocoa Beach Regional Chamber of Commerce • Community Credit Union • Courtyard by Marriot • Export Compliance Services, Inc. • Florida Power and Light • IAP Worldwide Services, Inc. • Junior Achievement of East Central Florida • Lockheed Martin Space Systems Corporation

  10. Elections Held Officer elections are held each year. Candidates present lively bios and speeches hoping to be elected. Here are our new officers:

  11. Field trip to Cocoa Beach Regional Chamber of Commerce • Every year we visit the Chamber of Commerce. Students meet the Chamber President, Melissa Stains, who speaks about the role of the Chamber and the importance of volunteering and networking. • In past years, students met Mr. Mac McLouth of the Canaveral Port Authority and motivational speaker Mr. Michael Chriswell. • This year students met an engineer from Lockheed Martin and a financial planner who discussed identity theft and credit scores.

  12. Community Credit Union • In September of 2008, we visited the Community Credit Union headquarters in Rockledge. • We met the President, Mr. David Brock, who told us of the history of CECU. • We heard from Ms. Deborah Blair who spoke of soft skills and how to best present yourself to make a good impression.

  13. Field trip to Brevard Community College, Lecture Series • In November, we attend the Bernie Simpkins Entrepreneurial Lecture Series at the King Center on the campus of BCC in Cocoa. • Mr. Joe Duda of the Duda Company was the guest entrepreneur. The prior year we saw Dave Anderson of Famous Dave’s Barbecue.

  14. Field trip to the Florida Solar Energy Center Before attending the Entrepreneurial lecture series, the Academy students visited the Florida Solar Energy Center The FSEC showed students that solar energy really is the resource of the future!

  15. Mock Job Interview Day • In March, we invite our business partners to come to the classroom for a Mock Job Interview event • The Business Lab will be turned into a Human Resource Department • Each student is interviewed by 2 different business partners. Students gain valuable feedback on interview skills and resume critiques.

  16. Guest Speakers • Hugh Halsey visits the Academy students to talk about the ever-changing financial world. • Ms. Hamilton also speaks about trends in hiring and the importance of good communication skills. • Mr. Mike Aller of the Space Coast Energy Consortium spoke about solar energy grants.

  17. City Hall and Public Works Visit • Assistant City Manager, A.J. Hutson invited the Academy for a walking tour of the Public Works building. • We saw many departments and learned about engineering, water management, storm water runoff, video cameras as well as the emergency call center, the police and fire operations.   18. HOLIDAY PARADE Each year we march through downtown Cocoa Beach in the Holiday Parade with our banners to promote our Academy.

  19. More Guest Speakers Courtney Culver of Symetrics Industries (and an Academy of Finance graduate from Melbourne High School) spoke about her internship experiences and gave advice on college life. Hugh Halsey of First Allied Securities spoke about market risk and the sub prime lending crisis. Mr. Al Neuharth, Founder of Florida Today, even came to speak to our students!

  20. Holiday Party • In December, the Academy hosts its annual Holiday Party with the FBLA club. • Guests join us to celebrate the Holiday season.

  21. Florida Today Visit • On January 16th, 2008 we visited the headquarters of Florida Today’s newspaper on US 1 in Melbourne. It was a great career shadowing event. The Academy will visit again in March of 2013. • We were given a tour and introduced to many facets of the publishing industry by our host, Mr. Bob Stover, Managing Editor.

  22. Rockwell Collins Visit • On Friday, January 9th 2009, we were invited to the Melbourne facility of Rockwell Collins. We were greeted by our hosts, Peggy and Pat of Human Resources, and engineers Justin and James. • They gave us all safety glasses to wear for the tour of their manufacturing facility. • We learned about the avionic display units and radios they make for airplanes. • We heard about various careers and the history of Rockwell Collins.

  23. Microsoft Certified Specialists • We began practicing advanced Microsoft Word features in Computing for College and Careers. • More than thirty Academy students have now become Microsoft Office Specialists in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel by passing the timed online exam.

  24. Trip to EPCOT • In October 2008, we attended the 3 hour behind the scenes Disney YES (Youth Educational Series) at EPCOT. We heard about customer service and how Disney employees are all “cast members”. • We learned about the international operation of Disney Sea in Tokyo, Japan and a future Disney planned for Saudi Arabia. • In January 2013, we went back to EPCOT and learned about the factors that forward advances in technology

  25. COMMUNITY SERVICE • We have chosen the Walk for Juvenile Diabetes at Lori Wilson Park in the spring as our community service project. • In 2013, the Academy plans on attending the Walk for Diabetes for the seventh year in a row. • Other community service events will include Chamber of Commerce events, such as the Cocoa Beach Air Show.   26. Academy Awards Luncheon In May, the Cocoa Beach Chamber of Commerce invites the top students to a lunch and gives awards for Academic Achievement and Community Service. Students look forward to this event and recognition.

  27. Junior Achievement programs • We have welcomed Junior Achievement volunteer, Mrs. Denise Song of Keep Brevard Beautiful, who came for 7 sessions called “Be Entrepreneurial”. • The class divided into 4 teams and learned about business planning and the 4 P’s of marketing. • Each of the 7 sessions were fun and educational.

  28. GREASE, the Musical • Our brand new $11 million dollar Performing Arts Theatre finally opened after 3 years of construction in 2008! • The debut celebration show was the musical Grease from April 22nd to April 26th! We had a cast of almost 100 students and teachers. • The Academy handled all aspects of business including marketing, advertising, cost analysis, fund raising as well as invitations and public relations.

  29. In Loving Memory • On December 1, 2007 We suddenly lost an Academy student, RafeMaccarone. • His podcast about his soccer trip to Argentina last summer had been posted on the internet 2 days earlier. • Visit http://cbhs.podomatic.com

  30. WE ARE WINNERS! • In 2007 we walked for Joe’s Club which hosted the Alzheimer’s Walk. They notified us that we won a $1,600 raffle prize. • Donaleigh, the Academy President, rang the victory bell and we then donated the check back to the charity!

  31. Walk for Diabetes Every year the Academy participates in the JDRF Walk for Diabetes and raises money for this important charity!

  32. THE END (For NOW!) • We will have an End of the Year Bash – in May. • We have begun showing our new Academy Videos to all rising 9th and 10th graders during registration. • In the past, students have worked their internships at: • Brevard Workforce Development Board • Canaveral Port Authority • City of Cocoa Beach Summer Recreation Camp • Cocoa Beach Regional Chamber of Commerce • Country Inn and Suites in Cape Canaveral • Community Credit Union • Shore Lanes in Merritt Island • IF YOU WOULD BE WILLING TO HIRE A STUDENT INTERN, PLEASE SEE MRS.
