Join us on February 20, 2016, at Chandler City Conference Center for a day of exciting events designed to enhance math and science knowledge, improve problem-solving skills, and promote scientific reasoning among elementary-aged children. Participants will engage in challenges such as Mystery Architecture, Math Boggle, Trebuchets, and Tangrams. The top students and schools in each grade will receive awards. General Information • When: February 20, 2016 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. • Where: Chandler City Conference Center 180 S. Arizona Ave. • Who: Elementary-aged children, grades 6-8
Rules • Students may not use notes, calculators, or their own supplies • Students may be coached in advance • Exact problems given to students are kept confidential until event • Parents, teachers, and coaches may observe from bleachers
Events • You can set up events in a gymnasium as shown here. • I’ll describe the events on the next few slides.
Events for This Year’s Olympiad • Mystery Architecture (tower building) • Math Boggle (formulate equations from numbers on a grid) • Trebuchets (fuzzy ball launch) • Tangrams (shape puzzles)
Mystery Architecture • Build the tallest tower ppossible • Use only supplies provided • Supplies are a mystery until bag is opened
Math Boggle • Create math equations using contiguous squares • Example: • 9, 7, and 2 next to each other • Create the equation 9 – 7 = 2
Trebuchets • Use trebuchets to shoot fuzzy balls • Trebuchets are a fixed distance from targets • Must determine the correct amount of tensioon
Tangrams • Use 7 tans (flat objects in different sizes and shapes) • Arrange tans to form specified larger shapes
Awards • Top 3 students in each grade in each event • Top 3 schools in each grade in each event • Overall top 3 school winners in each grade
