  1. God, Guilt, & Following Jesus Luke 5:1-11

  2. Luke 5:1-3 1 On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

  3. Luke 5:4-6 4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking.

  4. Luke 5:7-10a 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.

  5. Isaiah 6:5 5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” How do we deal with guilt?

  6. Dealing with Guilt - Psychology • You only “feel” guilty. • There is no “right”. “The highest calling of modern psychology, then, is to recognize our instincts, repressions, guilt, and the like, and to ask, “How can mankind be improved?” Modern psychology accepts God’s death, doesn’t mourn His passing, and goes on to acknowledge Nietzsche’s logical implication of personal responsibility…” Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience.

  7. Dealing with Guilt - Religion • You are guilty before God. • You make it right. Religion leads to: • Legalism • Despair

  8. Dealing with Guilt - Gospel • You are guilty. • Jesus makes it (you) right. • Psychology denies guilt. Romans 1:18-31 • Religion masks guilt. Romans 2:1-5 • Jesus atones for guilt. Romans 3:21-26

  9. Luke 5:10b-11 And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

  10. Hebrews 12:1-2 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
