  2. *Signals of Troubled BreathingAdult • Noisy or painful breathing • Unusually deep or shallow breathing • Changes in skin color

  3. Conscious Choking • Universal Sign of Choking- clutching of the throat • If the victim is conscious and cannot cough, assume the airway is blocked.

  4. Conscious Choking • Encourage someone to continue to cough

  5. Choking-Adult and Child 5 back blows and 5 abdominalthrusts (until the object comes out or victim passes out)

  6. Choking Victim-conscious 1- Get consent from the victim. 2- give 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts 5 Back blows 5 Abdominal thrusts

  7. If you are alone when choking, lean over a firm object, like the back of a chair and press your stomach against it.

  8. Choking Victim-conscious • Still call 9-1-1 even if the object comes out (there is a chance that tissue in the airway may swell) • If the victim is too large to reach around the abdomen, give chest thrusts (same technique but on the breastbone)

  9. Choking- Infant • 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts with the baby across your thigh • Using gravity to try and dislodge the object

  10. Choking- Infant • How can you tell an infant is choking? • *looked panicked and are not able to cry, cough or breathe. • *A breathing emergency is signaled by a wheezing or high pitched sound
