  1. Choking Means performing poorly due to FEAR

  2. Choking Fear releases powerful and primitive hormonal responses that interfere with the ability to perform Athletes that choke are only one step away from perfection They are much closer to being an elite athlete than those that ‘Tank’ or use temper tantrums

  3. Basic Truths to Choking • Everyone chokes sometimes, always vulnerable • Choking means you care and are emotionally engaged • Toughness means to cope with choking rather than eliminating it • Although disciplined tough thinking go along way to eliminating the choking response

  4. Basic Truths to Choking • Choking is a biochemical response • The hormones are real and so is the response • It is not all in your head • Navy Seal Training

  5. Choking Why do some do it more than others? Why are some athletes more venerable? • The more fragile and insecure your REAL self is the more vulnerable you are to choking • Higher the confidence the lower the risk of choking • Higher motivation increases the risk of choking • Overly involved parents increase the risk • The more you fear choking, the more it will occur • Learning to control it comes from acquiring toughness skills

  6. Choking It indicates Strength It means you are tough enough to face fear head on And not back out emotionally Means you are risking it when things are tough You can’t always prevent the chemistry of fear from happening but effort and attitude are in your control Athletes who choke but still continue to fight with 100% effort and total positivism show toughness

  7. Choking Choking is a bad feeling because you know your talent and skill is not fully engaged Mastering the choking response is like learning a new skill Choking is simply the wrong response to fear Learning to overcome fear is the hardest thing to overcome in sport and in many cases life – It requires great courage –

  8. Choking • To love winning is easy; to love the battle requires toughness • Toughness is not a destination… it is a journey without end • Rather than fear and helplessness, you need to respond with aggressiveness, fighting spirit. And a sense of calmness and confidence
