  1. Meet GIL • GIL is the University of Georgia’s new online library catalog • GIL replaces the UGA Libraries’ Catalog on GALIN

  2. Accessing GIL • GIL can be searched either on or off-campus without a password. • At a library workstation, click on the icon for GIL. • Outside the library, point your Web browser to: http://gil.uga.edu

  3. The GIL homepage with four different types of searches

  4. GIL also includes the catalog for class reserve readings

  5. Searching for • A book by title? • Books written by an author? • The location of a journal? Then try:

  6. the “Title/Author/Subject” search

  7. At the “Title/Author/Subject” screen, select the type of search

  8. To find the bookAn Education in Georgia

  9. Leave off initial articles such as an, a, the, la, el, der education in georgia

  10. Click on the “Search” button education in georgia

  11. Results: all books owned by UGA whose titles start with those words

  12. Click on the title for more information.

  13. Let’s look at this in more detail...

  14. Each record has links to other books by the author

  15. plus links to other books on these subjects

  16. and a link by call number to “virtually browse” the shelves = NOT CHECKED OUT

  17. If the book is charged out, you may place a recall request.

  19. The password for using GALILEO off-campus is also under “Request.”

  20. Print or save either one book, the entire list, or marked items.

  21. To mark items:

  22. At the bottom of each screen are several different options for printing and saving.

  23. “Save to disk” formats results for either printing or saving.

  25. Finding a book by author king, stephen

  26. Results: all the Stephen Kings.

  27. Click on the one with 43 books.

  28. …and bring up a list of books by him.

  29. Back at the author list: “See also”

  30. Clicking on that brings up books that Stephen King wrote under a pseudonym.

  31. Finding the location of a periodical (journal, magazine, or newspaper) journal of american history

  33. Clicking on “also available online” brings up the full-text of the journal.

  35. Try “Precision Search”

  36. With Precision Search, build a search step-by-step.

  37. To find books on the history of silent films: silent films

  38. The default is “any of these” words silent films

  39. To find “silent films” as a phrase silent films

  40. Select the type of search. Keyword Anywhereis the broadest possible search. silent films

  41. Precision Search can search by:

  42. Add in the second part of the search silent films history

  43. Leave as “any of these” and “Keyword Anywhere” silent films history

  44. Click on Search silent films history

  47. Accessing your own record

  48. As with “Request” for recalls and the GALILEO password,
