  1. 3-8 Unions and Intersections of Sets Objective: To find union and intersection of sets.

  2. 3-8 Unions and Intersections of Sets • On page 214 Solve the Get Ready! • www.pearsonsuccessnet.com

  3. 3-8 Unions and Intersections of Sets • The union of two or more sets is the set that contains ALL elements of the sets. • The symbol for union is  • To find the union of two sets. List the elements that are in either set or in both sets (no need to repeat elements). • An element is in the union if it belongs to at least one of the sets.

  4. 3-8 Unions and Intersections of Sets • Example 1: Page 215 In your left pocket you have a quarter, a paper clip, and a key. In your right pocket, you have a penny, a quarter, a pencil, and a marble. What is a set that represents the different items in your pockets?

  5. 3-8 Unions and Intersections of Sets • Example 1: In your left pocket you have a quarter, a paper clip, and a key. In your right pocket, you have a penny, a quarter, a pencil, and a marble. What is a set that represents the different items in your pockets? • Step 1: Write sets for each pocket: • Step 2: Write the union L  R

  6. 3-8 Unions and Intersections of Sets • Intersection of two or more sets is the set of elements that are common to every set. An element is in the intersection if it belongs to ALL the sets. • The symbol for intersection is  • When you find the intersection of two sets, list only the elemnets that are in BOTH sets.

  7. 3-8 Unions and Intersections of Sets • Disjoint sets have no elements in common. • The intersection of a disjoint sets is ? • Empty set { }

  8. 3-8 Unions and Intersections of Sets • PROBLEM 2: • Set X = {x| x is a natural number less than 19} • Set Y = {y| y is an odd integer} • and set Z = {z| z is a multiple of 6} • What is X  Z? • What is Y  Z?

  9. 3-8 Unions and Intersections of Sets • Problem 3: Page 216 Three friends are going camping. The item in each of their backpacks form a set Which items do all three friends have in common. • Draw a Venn Diagram.

  10. 3-8 Unions and Intersections of Sets • Problem 4: Work with a partner: • 500 Commuters polled, some drive, some take public transportation, and some do both.
