  3. Social Changes • Searching for identity • Seeking independence • Looking for new experiences • Thinking more about right vs. wrong • Influenced more by friends • Developing/exploring romantic relationships • Communicating in different ways

  4. Emotional Changes • Showing strong feelings • More sensitive to other people’s emotions • More self-conscious • Sense of invincibility

  5. Relationship Changes • Spends less time with family • Engages in more arguments with parents • Voices different opinions • Re-evaluates friendships

Tips for Parents • Share your beliefs and values • Put parenting first and friendship second • Model positive relationships • Model positives ways to deal with difficult situations • Get to know your child’s friends • Listen to your child’s feelings • Be open about your feelings • Pick your battles

Causes for Concern • Choosing friends that are much older • Refusing to provide information about new friends • Avoiding friends • Loss of interest in activities that were previously enjoyed • Excessive anger, moodiness, worrying, or crying • Difficulty concentrating • Sudden drop in grades • Changes in sleeping patterns • Changes in eating habits Social Emotional
