  1. The Challenge of Auto and Aero Electronic System of Systems Engineering (ESoSE) Presented to MBSE Workshop 27th January 2013 Prof C.E. Dickerson Chair INCOSE Architecture Working Group International Workshop 26 – 29 Jan 2013 Jacksonville, FL USA

  2. International Workshop 26 – 29 Jan 2013 Jacksonville, FL USA Discussion Points • Purpose • Offer a challenge case study for the MBSE Initiative • Cross domain but with common challenges • Background • Automotive & Aerospace Electronic System of Systems (ESoS) • Different approaches to design and acquisition • Goal • Achieve an integrated approach to ESoS engineering • Test methods, tools and approaches in defined case studies • Scope • Limited to Automotive & Aerospace ESoS but extensible

  3. International Workshop 26 – 29 Jan 2013 Jacksonville, FL USA Purpose of Presentation • Offer a challenge case study for the MBSE Initiative • Complementary to the current 5 MBSE Challenge Teams • Especially M&S Integration and Space Systems • But focused on electronic systems to ‘bound the scope’ • Cross domain but with common challenges • Auto & Aero vehicle electronic systems have become complex • Shared problems of COTS acquisition & safety critical operation • Classic SoS problem: no single design authority across ESoS

  4. International Workshop 26 – 29 Jan 2013 Jacksonville, FL USA Background • Electronics comprise ~ 50% of vehicle value • A sample Automotive ESoS approach to acquisition • AUTOSAR: http://www.autosar.org/ • A development partnership of car manufacturers and suppliers • A worldwide automotive standard for electronics and software • A sample Aerospace ESoS approach to design • IMA Architecture • A distributed real time network of computing units • Imposes requirements on the operating system • OMG SysML annex- Hybrid Sport Utility Vehicle (HSUV) ESoS Electronic System of Systems AUTOSAR Automotive Open System Architecture IMA Integrated Modular Avionics

  5. International Workshop 26 – 29 Jan 2013 Jacksonville, FL USA Goal • Achieve an integrated approach to ESoS engineering • ESoSE methods independent of tools and modeling languages • Use of modeling languages (e.g. SysML) • Integration with modeling and simulation tools • Case studies • The SysML HSUV as a starting point for a conceptual vehicle • Possibly evolve to a common auto-aero ESoS architecture? • Test methods, tools & approaches in case studies: prove the integrated approach is executable and repeatable ESoSE Electronic System of Systems Engineering IV&V Integration, Verification and Validation SysML Systems Modeling Language HSUV Hybrid Sport Utility Vehicle

  6. International Workshop 26 – 29 Jan 2013 Jacksonville, FL USA Connection to IEEE and AIAA • IEEE Embedded Systems has a related activity • Automotive electronic embedded systems • Annual conference, Embedded Systems Letters • IEEE System of Systems Engineering (SoSE) • Annual SoSE conference • New session on auto aero ESoSE starting this year • AIAA Aircraft Journal • Initial focus of academic research for (2) AWG Co-chairs • First paper has just been accepted • INCOSE Systems Journal for industrial systems focus AIAA American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics ESoSE Electronic System of Systems Engineering

  7. 2013 SoSE Conference, 2nd - 6th June Maui, Hawaii IEEE System, Man, and Cybernetics Society and IEEE Reliability Society announce the 8th International Conference on System of Systems Engineering (SoSE) with its vast ramifications in numerous engineering fields such as control, computing, communication, information technology and in applications such manufacturing, defense, national security, aerospace, aeronautics, energy, environment, healthcare, and transportation. The conference theme is “SoSE in Cloud Computing and Emerging Information Technology Applications”, two areas of significant investment within the public and private sectors as well as being significant initiatives areas of IEEE. Papers on theories, methodologies, model-based systems engineering and applications of system of systems engineering in science, technology, industry, and education are welcome. • Deadlines: • • Papers submission (online): 1st March, 2013 • • Notification of accepted papers: 12th April, 2013 • • Final Camera Ready Manuscript due: 12th May, 2013
