  1. “Swimming into the Future!”

  2. About us • Over 130 years of swimming • Currently have around 150 members • Swim 21 accreditation for levels 1 and 2 • One of the feeder clubs into Gallica • 17 members in Gallica • 3 in other squads How do we progress from here?

  3. What we have now? • Old national teaching plan (approx 12 years old) • Working towards levels (6-10) • Predominantly stroke technique • Very little skill base

  4. The New National Teaching Plan • 7 stages of teaching (we will have 4+) • These detail the FUNdamental movement skills • Each stage has a number of outcomes that the child has to achieve before moving up • Not only teaches skills required to swim but also water safety and competence in water

  5. How it will be implemented? • Assessment of all children in improvers groups through September • Each group will be allocated a Friday in September (therefore improvers 9/10 will not be in each week and stage 8 will commence each Friday in October) • Assessments will be done by Rick and Sarah Darragh (Aquatic development officer at Preston Council) and Michael Wilson • Each child will be appointed a Stage (from 4-8) dependent on ability • These new stages deliberately DO NOT in anyway correspond with the old improvers groups

  6. What is going to happen? • In the first few weeks of September the swimming lane layout at Daisyfield will change (normal improvers groups) Deep End 7 (5) Improvers Levels 10 (Dgroup) 8 (6) 8 (6) 9 (7) 6 (4) Shallow end

  7. What is going to happen (cont’) • The children will be assessed through September and be given a new stage which they will go into in October (will continue in normal improvers groups until told different) • The new stages will run to a scheme of work and also to new criteria (as set up by the NPTS) • Each teaching group will have it’s own teacher

  8. Progression • Children will be able to move up once they have passed every objective to the required standard of the new national teaching plan • The child will have to be assessed through the head teacher as well (either myself or a new appointment) • The swimmers will pass up through each teaching stage (up to stage 7) then into Competitive D group • Then either progress into the competitive side or the junior and senior coaching side of the club

  9. The new club layout • The new Squad Structure • Progression from teaching into the first stage of coaching (Competitive D group) • From here they will either progress onto either junior/senior coaching or the competitive side • All squads with children over the age of 10 will have the possibility of progressing into Gallica only at the coaches discretion!

  10. D, C and B Groups Competitive D – This is the first stage of competitive coaching where swimmers will concentrate on stroke technique and develop drills and skills required for the later squads Competitive C – The second stage of competitive coaching where swimmers will develop technique on all four strokes as well as learn the rules of the sport and enter low level competition Competitive B – The third stage of competitive coaching bases its training around the 200IM. The swimmers should now be taking more responsibility with their equipment, drinks and what they do in training

  11. The A Groups • Competitive A2 Group aimed at Age Group Swimmers (ages 10-15) with an interest of competing at a regional and above level • Competitive A1 Group aimed at swimmers over 14 who are interested in a sprint programme and want to still compete. • These children will also be offered the opportunity to gain coaching qualifications and coach for us.

  12. Junior and Senior Coaching groups • Junior Group – this group will be for those age group swimmers who require further coaching of technique and skills and/or improvement in stamina in order to be able to progress into a demanding competitive environment • Senior Group – this group will give the opportunity for those older swimmers who want a social or fitness swim to remain within the club and possibly compete in the National League Team or Level 3 competitions.

  13. Friday Assessment Slots • Improvers 6+7 – 11th September (Me and Michael Wilson) • Improvers 8 – 18th September (Me and Sarah Darragh) • Improvers 9+10 – 25th September (Me and Sarah Darragh • All at 7.00-7.45pm SWIMMING IN THE NEW STAGES WILL COMMENCE IN OCTOBER (WHEN ANNOUNCED) – SWIMMING TIMES WILL NOT CHANGE

  14. Do Not Worry • This is a nationally driven ASA initiative affecting all swim 21 clubs. • It will give your swimmer a better opportunity to develop within the sport • Everything we do is geared towards giving your children the best opportunity to develop and maximise their potential

  15. Any Questions ? • ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
