  2. + THE PROJECT • Financed by the Fundamental Rights and Citizenship Programme – EC- DG JLS • 11 partners: Lead Partner: ANCI Italian National Association of Municipalities (among ENSA partners: Veneto, Puglia, Extremadura) • 13 associated partners (among them ENSA inclusion network, UNCCAS, ELISAN) • Started last February, ends June 2011

  3. + APPROACH +RESPECT aims at bringing together a group of local and regional authorities, NGOs, ROMAs representations and civil society in order to find concrete ways to: • improve the governance of LOCAL dynamics regarding ROMAs participation in civil society as part of human rights, in line with social and economic approaches to the social inclusion • tackling anti-Roma discrimination and anti-Gypsism behaviors, focusing on more knowledge as the foundation to debunk stereotypes (public officers, experts and practitioners, the youth, the media, the ROMA themselves) • increase the civil society knowledge, intercultural dialogue and awareness of Roma peoples to pave the way for a greater inclusion respecting diversity as a value.

  4. + Specific objectives and actions (1) • local “Observatory” on Roma peoples to improve and share a knowledge base of quality-data specific on ROMA peoples for the fight against ROMA discrimination by means of effective policies. Local- level good practices analysis and final policy recommendations

  5. + Specific objectives and actions (2) • Roma peoples participation in civil democracy processes: • to improve the capacity of public regional and local authorities and their staff to relate with and provide services to ROMA • Action: Participatory working groups/workshops in involved municipalities: mainstreaming of minorities rights in local policies • to coordinate local stakeholders and to increase participation of ROMA peoples in democratic processes (multi-level governance improvement) • Actions:Capacity building for public officers and practitioners; and “know your law and your rights” workshop with ROMA communities, focusing on minors and women’s rights

  6. + Specific objectives and actions (3) • anti-Gypsism information and awareness campaign • To decrease the negative public perception of and to improve media ethical communication about ROMA increasing interaction opportunities and mutual understanding • Action: professional media: communicating the Roma life, debunking stereotypes and combating anti Gypsism • to design and implement educational curricula information actions fostering intercultural exchanges with specific targets (youth, citizens) • Action: development of school curricula in compulsory schools and final display of work;

  7. + Specific objectives and actions (4) • anti-Gypsism information and awareness campaign (cont’d) • offering public occasions for mutual knowledge among components of society, including Romani culture, history and traditions as part of the local cultural heritage • Actions: travelling stand participating in local cultural festivals (workshop, cultural, multimedia, musical shows); Web-based platform of discussion, results of the project and of activities; . promotional material; 1 video in episodes, based on project’s activities and people; 3 conferences + 4 local seminars
