  6. Accreditation of curricula in higher education (Studiengänge) in Germany • Three different approaches: • Accreditation by the government • Accreditation by associations and companies • Accreditation of distance learning curricula

Accreditation by the government • Start: 1998, introduction of the first Bachelor and Master of Science curricula • Decision of “Hochschulrektorenkonferenz” and “Kultusministerkonferenz” (Council of university chairmen and Council of ministers of education) - • Starting an independent “Council of accreditation” (Akkreditierungsrat - www.akkreditierungsrat.de) • Aim: Transparency of curricula • The council mandates accreditation agencies (2001: 5) • Accreditated curricula: 2004: 370 • Criteria: • Quality of the curriculum • qualification for special professions • staff • equipment

Accreditation by associations and companies • Example: German Multimedia Association (dmmv) • Own criteria for the quality of curricula and institutes • Targets: • Support for Human Relations Specialists - “where will we get the best new employees?” • partnership between association, companies and institute • influencing of curricula (contents) • www.dmmv.de

  9. Accreditation of distance learning curricula • ZFU (Staatliche Zentrale für Fernunterricht = Public Administration for Distance Education) • Public administration of all German States • Quality in distance learning • Only for curricula with fees • www.zfu.de
