English Unification • In 1066 William the Conqueror Invades across the English Channel and defeats the English King Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings • William declares himself King and confiscates all the land for himself. • He then places his own Vassals in control creating himself the Lord/King of all England

  4. French Unification • The French King was completely insignificant. He controlled only a small amount of land surrounding Paris • However the Capetian Dynasty will grow in power and gain more territory for the King. • Ultimately Phillip II will gain enough land that the French King will become more powerful then his Vassals.

  5. Causes of the War • The intertwining of the French and English Royal Family • Dispute over the Heir to the Throne of France • Dispute over the land England Controlled in France • The King of England was Vassal to the French King

The Major Events of the War • Not one singular war but a string of Invasions by the English over a Hundred Year Period • The Famous Battles of Crecy, Poitiers, and Agincourt • The Longbow changes the face of warfare • Guns are used in Europe for the First time • In the end Joan of Arc saves France and forces the English from France

  7. Legacy of the War • Strengthens the Peasant Class • The Destruction of the Noble Class in France • Nationalism Strengthens the Role of the King • These three together will be the destruction of Feudalism
