Possible compliments: strategies for staying focused and engaged in reading and strategies previously taught Table Compliment Conferences – Short conferences where the teacher focuses on reinforcing a strategy the readers are already using well Opportunity to teach all readers at a table or group where the teacher uses one student’s work as a model for the others in the group Reading and strategies previously taught

  4. Conferences Unveiled Strategy Conferences – Conferences where the teacher focuses on one strategy strategically chosen due to the reader’s need(s) Teachers learn student’s “just right” reading level and then are able to coach the reader towards the next level due to the skills involved at that level. Research – Decide – Teach Conferences – A type of strategy conference where the teacher researches what skills a reader can add to what they are already doing well or what strategies a reader needs and then plans instruction accordingly.

  5. Conferences Unveiled Accountability Conferences – Conferences where the teacher holds readers accountable to what has already been taught by conferring about jots, understandings, inferences and may begin with: Can you show me where you _______________ (last teaching point). How is _______________ (last teaching point) going? What has been tricky with _______________ (last teaching point)?

  6. Conferences Unveiled Small group- Conferences where the teacher pulls a group together of 2-5 readers who need work with the same strategy Readers in small group conferences are reading a variety of books on a variety of levels. The teacher focuses on a skill (Inferencing) rather than understanding a particular book. A shared text at all students’ instructional level is used for instruction. Readers practice with teacher support. Data from conferring notes, running records, mini-lesson assessments, jots and reading notebooks are all used to form groups.
