  1. Ocean Farm TechnologiesInc. Fish Farming In The Open Seas

  2. The AquaPod® Pen System

  3. Market Opportunity • UN Food and Agriculture Organization: • Aquaculture must double in 20 years to meet global demand • Shortfall by 2025 from existing sources is Tensof millions of metric tons • One million m3 of fish = 50 million m3 of new nets = $1.5 billion in new net pens for aquaculture @$30/ m3 • Most of this expansion will be offshore, in deep water

  4. More Market Opportunity • Farming of new high value species • Cobia, grouper, moi, bream, amberjack, pompano • cod, halibut, haddock, sablefish • Countries and regions focussed on deep water farming: • Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, Hawaii, Taiwan, Korea, Australia • Ireland, Scotland, Portugal, Italy (Mediterranean) • Regions previously excluded from marine fish farming due to lack of protected near shore sites. • Need for support systems : • Feeders, Transfer & Harvest, Monitoring • Remote monitoring and feeding operations (telemetry)

  5. Problems with Current Near-to-Shore Fish Farming • Regulatory burden • Water temperature • Disease worsened by crowding • Perceived affect on land values and aesthetics • Environmental: water quality and fish containment

  6. Solutions with off-shore locations • Vast new geographic regions • Avoidance of low or high water temp conditions • Waste nutrient impact significantly lessened • Isolation from other farms = lower disease or parasite transmission • Less conflict with near shore recreational users and onshore land owners • issue: integration with offshore fishermen • Better oxygen, water quality, water temp = enhanced fish growth, FCR, $ROI • Stronger, better containment

  7. Benefits of the AquaPod® Design Exclusive patent-pending technology • Utilizes wire mesh netting: escape and predator proof, steel structural element • reduction in need for diver-assisted maintenance and repair -- SAFER • No net antifoulant needed - easy to clean • Supports environmental monitoring systems and sound fish farming practices

  8. Why a sphere? • A sphere has more volume for a given surface area than any other shape. ECONOMY • Corollary: A sphere has less surface area exposed than any other volume. REDUCEDRISK • For any given force, a sphere will more evenly distribute that force than any other shape. STRENGTH

  9. Why a geodesic sphere? • The triangle is the only polygon that is inherently stable. • When triangles are connected to form a sphere, the sphere is very stable. • Structural qualities that make geodesic structures difficult on land (in gravity) such as flexion and leakage at joints are not a problem in neutral buoyancy, as proved by this new application as a geodesic fish containment. DYNAMIC STABILITY AND MODULARITY

  10. Finite Element Analysis Model of 30 meter diameter four frequency AquaPod in a 2 knot current with a five point mooring bridle ANY HUB CAN BE A MOORING ATTACHMENT

  11. FEA computer model of existing 10 m prototype AquaPod, four mooring points with bridles (plan view)

  12. AquaPod® Modular Net Panels Just as many bricks are joined to build a strong building, many net panels are fastened together to form the AquaPod. 10 meter = 80 panels 20 meter = 320 panels 28 meter = 720 panels

  13. AquaPod Modular Net Panels • Steel wire mesh is the ultimate netting for containment security and predator deterrence. • Weight of wire mesh netting has prevented its use in past net pen designs. Two men carrying steel pen panel.

  15. AquaPod® Containment SystemBuoyancy & Mooring Many options for mooring - this example for illustrative purposes only

  16. Two person assembly with crane and air ratchet wrench

  17. Each panel is close to neutrally buoyant in salt water. Weight and ballast are added with marine galvanized steel hardware. Fixed buoyancy can be set with closed cell foam. Adjustable buoyancy is controlled with inflatable tubes.

  18. Pen Rotation for Maintenance Perspective of a four point mooring with bridle attachments typical mooring grid

  19. To rotate, drop one set of mooring bridles. Remaining bridles become axis of rotation.

  20. More Benefits • Scalable size to 4 times competitor size - up to 12,000 m3 of pen volume • Geodesic dynamic strength and neutral buoyancy provides below-surface stability • Operational savings on labor for deployment, modular net handling, and diving • Competitive entry cost on $ / m3 basis • Easily shipped in containers

  22. US Patent pending Broad claims for modular net panel concept Claims for unique fish transfer method AquaPod® trademark registered International PCT filing to be done by October, 2005 Cartwright Engineering patent applied for panel lacing system Huge new intellectual property potential for support systems Intellectual property

  23. Summary • Significant long term market growth for net pens. • Wire net design = no predation, no escapement, less net repair • Lower costs to maintain existing nets • Lower operating costs • Lower capital costs • Easy to ship and deploy at sea

  24. ...Summary … The AquaPod® containment system is • Stable in strong off-shore conditions • Safer to build, use, maintain and repair • Readily adaptable for new species • Improved methods of feeding, harvesting and transferring of fish • A new standard for containment security • The first stage of innovative technology development for Ocean Farm Technologies
