  3. Prime Number • A whole number with exactly two factors, one (1) and itself • Examples: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, etc.

  4. Composite Number • A whole number that has more than two factors • Examples: 4, 6, 8, 10, etc.

  5. I can . . . • identify common factors of a set of whole numbers. • identify the greatest common factor for two or more numbers. • find the prime factorization of a given whole number.

  6. Factors • Numbers that are multiplied together to make a product • A product is the answer of a multiplication problem.

  7. Greatest Common Factor • The greatest of the common factors of two or more numbers is called the greatest common factor or G.C.F.

  8. Common Factors • Factor (s) that are shared by 2 or more numbers. • Example: a common factor of both 4 and 6 is 2.

  9. How do I find the Greatest Common Factor (G.C.F)? • List ALL the factors for each given number. (from the smallest to the largest) • Circle ALL the factors each number has in common. • Identify the Greatest Common Factor shared by each number.

  10. Example # 1 for Finding the Greatest Common Factor • Find the G.C. F. of 30 and 15 • The G.C. F. of 30 and 15 is 15.

  11. Example # 2 for Finding the Greatest Common Factor • Find the G.C. F. of 16 and 10 • The G.C. F. of 16 and 10 is 2 .

  12. What is Prime Factorization? • Prime Factorization is a way of expressing a composite number as a product of its prime factors. • A factor tree can be used to find the prime factorization of a number.
