  1. Ballast Water and Zebra Mussels Intruder Alert Activity

  2. Ballast Water • Taking in organisms from other ecosystems and transporting them to new ones • Only the toughest survive the journey • Incredibly hard to remove once they are introduced • A new to balance ships could be the next great invention. • Any Ideas?

  3. Factors of the environment Biotic Abiotic • Organisms that species might interact with • Birds • Plants • Fish • Crustaceans • Non-living factors that the species will interact with • Nutrient availability • Hard surfaces available • Amount of coastline available

  4. Niche • All of the physical and biological conditions the organism lives with, and the way the organism manipulates those conditions. • Types of food • How it obtains food • Which other organisms use the species for food • Zebra Mussels Wow! Those are all Zebra Mussels!

  5. Community Interaction • Competition • Resources the organism has available to it • Competitive Exclusion Principle • What kind of species would be conflicting with Zebra Mussels? • Can you identify that species? • Predation • What kind of food is available to Zebra Mussels • How do they eat it?

  6. Community Interaction (cont.) • Symbiosis • Mutualism – both species benefit from a relationship • Commensalism – one species benefits but the other is not harmed • Parasitism – one organism lives on or inside another organism and harms it. • Is there an example for each one of these when it comes to Zebra Mussels?
